center serving wax it yes or no ??

I have been told not to because the wax is just a dirt and grit magnet and will build up in your trigger and cause your serving to seperate.

yet the Excal video says to wax the string..

I put the wax on the center serving. Works well.

Every time I get those burning smell after the shot, I put wax again.

You must rub it tight on the serving using your fingers (may burn them, but just a little, ) or a little piece of leather.

I have always waxed the center serving & string by applying the string wax then rubbing briskly with a piece of leather to heat the wax & melt it in. (the hair dryer would do the same thing)
I do not let it build up excessively and I have never had any problems with the claws or trigger. I also wipe the rail clean after every shooting session, then apply a very light coat of a beeswax/neetsfoot oil lube I make myself (50/50 mix of beeswax & neetsfoot oil) by rubbing it with a sheepskin pad I keep coated with the lube. I use this same lube on all my muzzleloaders (inside & out) and most of my knives, hatchets, saws, etc. Never any rust problems with steel items, and it's a good bullet lube, too!

Interesting... I've been wondering about this too and have a few additional questions on waxing... hope you don't mind continuing the discussion. Do you take the string off to wax it? do you wax the loops at the ends? Do you wax the entire string or just the "wound areas" (servings?) How often (how many shots) do you wax?

I wax the entire string lightly (not the end loops, just the string & serving) and rub it to heat & melt it in on a new string. From then on I usually just wax the center serving lightly every 20 - 30 shots.
