Fullmoon hunting
Fullmoon hunting
Does anyone know if hunting in fullmoon conditions affect animal sightings?
I thought they fed during the night more with a full moon. That would reduce your sightings during the daytime hours. This is what I have experienced in the past number of years but I do not have much of a chance to hunt anymore because I am in Ottawa and have no place to put a deer or a vehicle that will take one home. If anyone in Ottawa wants another hunting partner with a bow let me know, I only have a small freezer though.
It has mostly been my experience that hunting the mourning following a full moon that I don't see many deer since I believe they are moving even more through the night since they can see even better with a full moon, but if it is a cloudy overcast night then it isn't as bright and that can change things. A bad day in the woods is better than a good day anywhere else.

A very successful crossbow hunter from Maryland that goes by Dave Hawk uses what are called moon transit times. I can't quite remember the details, but it is something to do with the moon being on the exact opposite side of the earth. The transit time can come anytime day or night, but the idea is to hunt when the moon transit peaks during the dayitme.
So to get this "moon transit time" for your location, go to
http://aa.usno.navy.mil/
Click the first link, which is "Complete Sun and Moon Data for One Day"
Use "form A", and fill in tomorrow's date. (I just ran it for Oct. 20), and enter your state and city. Then click "get data".
The moon transit time for Fri., Oct. 20 is 11:35am. According to Dave Hawk, this will be a peak feeding time.
I never used this much. I hunt every day if the weather is right. If it's below 55°F, the wind is light or calm, and there is high pressure, I kill deer. It's simple!

Charles Alshiemer from Deer&Deer Hunting has been doing a 15 year study on Deer movement during full moon and has found no difference in deer movement during the full moon.Martin wrote:Does anyone know if hunting in fullmoon conditions affect animal sightings?

full moon
The man who taught my brother and I about hunting deer down here in Texas told us to hunt for trophy deer between 10am and 2pm after most hunters go back to camp. The deer learn that there are less people in the woods. and move about more freely. Full moon is one of my favorite times to still hunt. Move no faster than about 1/4 mile in an hour and always watch your back trail.
