Deer Bed Question

Post by maple »

Early yesterday afternoon I was out scouting with the recent light snow we had and found one area with 6 fresh deer beds in good balsam cover. They all occured within 40 yards of each other. All were used since we got snow the night before, and I suspect I actually pushed a couple of them off their beds given the quick escape route they took over skim swamp-ice directly away from my approach path. I know there were at least two different animals given the sizes of the beds. I could not figure out them all due to meandering tracks. How do I interpret this?

Do deer use the same beds day after day? (night after night)

Do I assume there are 6 deer there, or just a couple using a few different beds?

If it's below freezing just check to see if the bed is frozen or not to get an idea if they were there recently. They may return to the general area to bed again, but it's hard to predict. Depens a lot on what else is available and how pressured they feel.

It has been my experience that they bed in the same area but not always the same bed ...

Sometime you will be able to find one spot that has old beds , new beds etc. judging from the freshness of the sign ...

Here is a picture of a bedding area that we always puch deer out of ... it is approx 1 acre of pines and they bed here and there in it ...

Here is another pine stand beside a food source ....

The bed here ...

And feed here ...

That's really bizarre. And what's with the monoleg?

That deer looks about as good as some bad mounting jobs I've seen! :)

Inflatable decoy

Some just think and live with the feel of deer, day and night
Old Indian saying, if a leaf falls from a tree in the woods the turkey will see it, the deer will hear it, the bear will smell it, the moose will not eat it, but be on the look-out for LeGrand.
