Cuba/fishing

Post by chris4570 »

Anyone been to Cuba? I am going mid April. Will be staying at a resort on the north side of Cuba. North of Santa Clara.

What kind of fishing/fish might I expect from the beach? What kind of tackle would you guys recommend.

Lots of big tarpon down there. Don't know if they are catchable from the beach but a lighted pier seems to attact them. Spearfishing is supposed to be amazing down there.

i was in houlgin 2005/2006 new years, i didnt do any fishing but i did snorkel right from the beach and there were all sorts of fish swimming around. It probably depends on how far you can cast and if the resort let you fish of shore but anyways iwould say give it a shot. The different kinds of fish were amazing. hope you catch a good one bring back some pictures

i would recomend flourocarbon leader material and "gulp" bait strips to enhance your chance.fishing around structure(s) and in current are usually a plus for many species, but it also makes loosing tackle easier. good luck!!

I have never fished in Cuda but I have in Bermuda. I have a friend and his parents are from there so down we went and stayed at his families home. I was using his dads stuff he had brought from Canada. 20 lb test spinning reel from shore. The biggest thing we caught was a fish the locals called a Bermuda Chub. The thing came close to spooling me. Looked like a giant silver dollar. Squid is like worms hear everything will go for it. So we bought some squid at the grocery store and it was cheaper then getting it at the bait store. Caught lots of fish and pound for pound they fight harder then fresh water fish. Lots of squirrel fish and grunts. Saw the odd barracuda while snokelling. Set up as if your going for salmon using roe but use squid you should get constant action. Good luck.

I was there 10 years ago.

We went fishing with four asian fishermen at our resourt. They went fishing every day. Boat was small so we were not out more than a km off shore but cought lots of weird little fish. But I hear the fresh water Bass are bigger there than anywhere else
