On the ranches in Texas you can hunt them how ever you desire. 24 hours a day, from a truck or with whatever weapon suits yer fancy. The all inclusives also give you all the alcohol you can consume and they will dress it and serve it to ya. Sounds like a bunch of fun to me. The truck thing may save ya from the prickly pear cactus, diamond backs and tarrantula's. They will kick all of it out of the blind for you but that does'nt mean more aren't comin.

Like someone mentioned, cook it real good!flbuckmaster wrote:HOGS ARE VERY PLENTIFUL HERE IN FLORIDA. WE CALL THEM "PINY WOODS ROOTERS". THE SOWS ARE DELICIOUS TABLE FARE BUT THE LARGER BOARS GET PRETTY RANK AND ARE NOT FIT FOR MUCH MORE THAT SAUSAGE. THE WIFE WOULD MUCH RATHER ME GO HOG HUNTING THAT DEER HUNTING AS SHE LIKES THE MEAT ALOT MORE THAT VENISON. I BELIEVE THEY RANGE AS FAR NORTH AS CANADA HERE IN THE U.S. BUT THEY REALLY LIKE THE WARMER TEMPS FOUND IN THE SOUTH. HERE IN FLORIDA HOG HUNTING IS BIG BUSINESS AND FOR A FEW HUNDRED BUCKS YOU CAN KILL 2 HOGS IN MANY PRIVATE PRESERVES WITH NO HUNTING LICENSE REQUIRED.![]()

In FL you can also shoot them from any Vehicle or Boat, but it cannot be in Motion!rutman wrote:On the ranches in Texas you can hunt them how ever you desire. 24 hours a day, from a truck or with whatever weapon suits yer fancy. In New Zealand many people live for pighunting. Dogs are used to hold or bail. Usually a knife is used to stick the pig. Big time recreation here, Specialy bred pig dogs are used, not hounds.
The pigs hair is burnt off on a fire and scraped down to get all the hair off before being butchered. Wild pork is very tasty, I prefer it over venison.

If it feels good, DO IT.
We boil water in a 55gal drum and place Burlap Sacks in the water and when the water is boiling, we use a Pole and place the Sacks on the Hogs for 20 mins to Scald the Skin. Then we use the back side of the butching knife to scrape the Hair off. It leaves it Pretty and White!NZ Hunter wrote:Same here here in FL, NZ!

That does look delicious! I can't wait to go, now I have to go get a darn passport! Should be done in about 3 months.
Hey Buckshot
Hunting over feed is a little weak in the sport too but that is how its done. You know how it is when you go somewhere else, do as they do. Besides, having somebody pulling prickly pears out of yer butt doesn't sound like much of a holiday so truck or whatever will do for me.

Scalding is a nice clean way.
We do similar, pour a bit of water on the pig before flaming it, then scrape the hair off. It is scalding in a way. Then flame them again to get a nice brown texture. Adds flavour and looks nicer. Can do the same thing with a blow torch. This way a pig can be singed up the river before coming home.
Some hunters use holder type dogs here, others use fast dogs for pulling up those runners them bail or hold depending on the size of the pig.
Not many hunters here are into pit bulls or bull terriors as they are prone to getting foot sore, and having a tendancy to ruin too much meat not to mention chewing up your mates dog and letting the pig go. More money spent at the vets.
I personally like a smart dog with a good nose that will bail a large boar but is hard enough to stop a runner and pull it up. If a dog has a long find its easier to find a dog or dogs on the bail.

No prickly pears for me!

There is some really neat info here Thanks NZ, Reb and others!
What do you mean when you say the dogs will bail a hog?
Enjoy the Harvest!
