I received an application today that seems like a Readers Digest Sweepstakes form (stating you are entered to win millions of dollars).

It indicates you will get their magazine "North American Hunter" and free hunting related product to review and then keep ($3,835,020 worth since they started). As well as enter to win some of the $40,000/month of hunting related products they give away each monthr. Membership seems $24/year and a money back guarentee.

Avoid it. It's a scam for the most part. Very much like the Readers Digest crap. I know some one who did join a few years ago. After a lot of pestering he finally got his "test" product. It was a cheap fishing lure. That was it. From there on it was just piles of junk mail. Do the math, $3,800,000 worth of test product given to over 800,000 people. That means the average "hunting related product" was worth just over $4.00.

TPM is right.I'm still a NAHC member ,just for the magasine and forum.Test item are worth from .05¢ to $9.99 max.Been member for over 4 years.Last fall there was a wish item that I would like to buy in a future.Can you beleive me they sent me the product and a $129.00 bill.I pack it back carefully and sent it back collect with a note that buying and wishing were two differents words.Last week receive a letter with excuses .
Take care what you fill out as forms,or it might cost you $$$$$

I tried it a few years back and it did take a long time to get your "free" test product. Mine was a small bottle of gun lubricant that I tried once. As far as the junk mail, there will be alot of it. On that same note that is partly why I dropped the NRA. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying the NRA doesn't do good things, but give me a break with the junk mail and harrassing phone calls. One of the last few times I received a phone call from the NRA he was asking why I was dropping them. I told him because I'm tired of getting phone calls at home but if they would not call for a one month period I would renew. Well I didn't have to renew because they kept calling. I hate sales calls, I don't care who they are.

These calls usually come at supper time. I ask for their home phone and and they ask why. I tell them that I want to call them and interupt their family meal the same as they did mine.

It's a good scam at that. You pay $24 to get $4.75 back. With 800,000 members they are raking in $19.2 million and returning $3.8 MRSP, which in reality they don't pay for. So it would surprise me if at the end of the year after admin. costs if they don't net at least $19 million.

Maybe I should start a lottery, offer 6 big prizes and guarantee that 1 in 2 will win a prize.

Charge $100 a ticket. After the big prizes are won, the rest of the winners all win $5.

Besides doing the Seinfeld, "Can I call you at home" skit, I also claim to be in the same business as the solicitors, and ask if maybe they could give me some leads and a part of their business, since my prices are probably cheaper than theirs. Most hang up before I do, but I had one company who after I hung up actually called again and ask if I was willing to work for them.

I replied, "It seems to me that you're having a hard enough time drumming up enough business for yourselves, what makes you think I'd want to do the work and share my profits with you." and left them speechless.

when i get telemarketer calls--it usually goes like this:

Q:can i speak to mr. st*&^&*(me)

A: he went out ot feed the pigs and aint got back yet

they usually hang up after that

i enjoy NAHC magazines but got tired of returning stuff(books and tapes)

One of the best tactics I've heard for telemarketers is to answer politely, tell them, "yes - I'd like to hear more" - then ask them if they can hold the line for a few seconds while you turn off the water (or TV or some other excuse). Lay the phone down and let it lay! They are holding on waiting for you and they aren't getting to make more calls, which means they are loosing time and money! They eventually hang up, and they aren't going to be in any hurry to call you back.

Not likely. They must have done a mass mailing as I came home to one in the mailbox too. I've gotten them several times in the past and those little orange vinyl card holders are starting to pile up!
Anyway, I say "not likely" because my 81 year old mother recieved one in the mail today too! She kept the address labels and the note pad and I took the stickers and the orange vinyl thingy. I do think I know how I ended up on their mailing list. A few years ago I subscribed t Outdoor Canada magazine. They spelled my last name wrong but I never bothered to correct them. Since then I've recieved various junk mail including the NAHC stuff addressed with the same mis-spelling!

They send me a sigh up card every year with a wallet size holder. don't join but keep the holder for hunting licences.
Don't usually join anything that woul have me as a member.
