EHD in my area

Post by wabi »

The DNR has listed my county in Ohio as one included in the confirmed Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) outbreak this summer. Haven't found any dead deer, but haven't been looking either. It does seem like numbers are down, but it could also be the very hot weather keeping them nocturnal. Hopefully they will be out more in the mornings and evenings when the weather cools off.

It hit really hard here in SW PA. Lots of Doe Hunters are waiting till late season to get their meat so they know it is good. Some xpect another outbreak real soon with this weather holding. 90 here the last 3 days. We need some killer frosts quick.

It all over the place... I talked to my friend that has a small farm on the eastern shore of Maryland and he's found 6 deer already and he hasn't gone into all the woods yet... It's a particularly nasty problem... Hit's mostly the young and the old in the herds... He's found all young Does and button bucks but a big 3 1/2 year old buck dropped right in front of he's neighbors house.... There's probably more desd too.. Last time it came through he lost 3 big bucks and a bunch of Does....and this year he has some super bucks on the property... I hope it doesn't get them.... I guess we need a cold snap.....

Haven't heard of any in East NC ... though we've had the "Blue Tongue" heareabouts before ... aren't the two related?

EHD in my area

Post by mike41 »

Friend of mine has found 5 dead deer, since sep.15. I called the Conservation Dept and ask them if they had any reports of Bluetonge or EHD and they said NO!! I told them of his finding the dead deer, and they didn't seem to be interested at all. Its states in our regulation manual that we are suppose to contact a Conservation Agent if we come across a diseased animal.

Like I said, very bad here. One co-worker has found 18 in the past 3 weeks on his farm and just South of me they are finding 20 to 30 on some farms. It is spotty which I dont understand. Some farms 1/2 mile from ones hard hit report no deaths. I think from what I read it has something to do with water sources. Slow moving stagnant water really harbors the biting midges while faster moving water doesnt seem to hold them. I dunno.

I Googled Bluetonge & EHD and the way I read it, is that they are basically the same thing, and until we get a good frost the conditions are better for the midges that carry the viral infection.

I'm sure DR.Dan understands this and could explain it a lot better than me.
