Coyote Pup
Coyote Pup
I got a question for you guys who know something about coyotes. It seems I'm up to my eyeballs in them here. This morning I heard a whining sound under my house, so, figuring it was my neighbor's little dog sneaked under the fence, I went out to put her back over in her yard. When I got there, I found a scruffy little pup hiding out under my AC conduit.
Getting it out was a chore as it was quite wild and fierce despite it's size. My other neighbor who is retired from the forest service came over and told me it is a coyote. It is now in a big plastic trash can curled up in a towel. It is too young to survive on it's own, and I'm assuming the mother was shot by someone like me.
So what do I do with it? Release it? Shoot it? Or.....
I have an idea, but I am unsure of the ethics of doing it. Since it won't stop whining, I thought about taking it out in the morning and using it as a coyote call/decoy. I could put it about 100 yards from the stand and really clean up. Has anyone ever done this? The coyote CANNOT stay here.
Thanks.

I would try to keep it for a bit, it would be highly educational at the very least. I have raised almost every type of wildlife around here from young (I am licensed to do so) and it can be very rewarding. No matter how tame you can make it it will still eventually turn into a typical coyote though..
The other side of the coin is using it for bait, that would work very well. One of the calls I use coyote hunting is a lost pup. You may want to check for the legalities of it first, not very often are you allowed to use live bait, unless of course you fish.

I'd teach him to fetch Ducks and take him down to Venice La. and do some hunt'n with him,,,,,If he didn't fetch I'd leave him with the Folks down at the ice house where they bring the fish in.
All kidding aside,,,, I'd call the Wildlife Resources in your area and tell them what you have.

Huntsman, rest! thy chase is done
Not sure of the laws in your state, but here it would be illegal to keep it without a permit.
I'd call a wildlife enforcement officer & turn it over to them!
BTW - I had a cooper's hawk land in my front yard a few years ago with an injured wing. I caught it and called the local wildlife officer. He picked it up right away and took it to a rehab center for care.

I'd turn it over the the MNR. They may have a program for orphaned yotes. We have some friends that raise orphaned racoons and they are slowly weened off human dependance, then released.
Probably only to come back and eat our garbage, but oh well.
If you have kids DO NOT show them the pup, or he will be staying for sure. Eating your food, sleeping in your bed, etc.

Our state law prohibits electronic calls, but does not address live ones. All the stores sell them, though. I think me and my new buddy are going hunting in the morning.Pydpiper wrote:I would try to keep it for a bit, it would be highly educational at the very least. Here we are allowed to use electronic calls for about anything but turkeys, but you can still buy the electronic calls too. I think they can put them on the shelves as "training devices".
Good luck this morning, the combination of noise and movement should work very well for you!

I have nothing against shooting any animal, but to take a pup out to the woods, to use it to attract other yotes, and then shoot the pup anyway, come on.
Just shoot the damn thing if you don't want it to grow up and eat something. Not a very humane way to treat any animal if you ask me. Sounds like there are a few guys here who used to like pulling legs off spiders and wings off flies.
How many of you would take a newborn fawn out to the woods, make it squeal, shoot the doe that comes in and then the fawn once it has served it's purpose???
Spend $20 on a predator call if you want to hunt yotes.
