You could also argue that most crossbows are not 350 fps. The article was comparing high speed verticles to high speed crossbows. That's the only way to attempt to compare apples to apples. I just wish the article had made specific comparisions. I think a very good arguement can be made when you look at a 350 fps verticle vs. a 350 fps crossbow. Everyone equates speed to effective range, so the arguement would have merit. I like that angle.

Crossbows are heavier, wider, louder . . .the only real advantage is the cocking and that's only if you are busted by the deer. However, if you are in a tree or a good blind, then odds are, you will not be busted drawing your verticle.

I haven't read the article yet but will do so. It occurs to me that if our crossbows are so damn accurate and far shooting perhaps more of the vertical bow hunters should be using them.Every deer hunting season there are a lot of wounded deer out there who might be hanging from the pole if the hunters had a more efficient weapon.
I wonder if there should be a restriction according to the brand of bow that is used. Should all V Bowers HAVE to use an APA or a Matthews Or a Jennings because someone thinks their choice of weapon is best?
Now don't get your crap hot because of this posting or it will burn your guts. It isa TIC(tongue in cheek) article as I think that the whole debate about V bows and CB's is so assinine.

Outdoor Canada article

Finally, was able to get through and post my response. In case it doesn't get published here's my reply for what it's worth:

Excellent article on crossbows. I shoot one; I also shoot a compound bow, and think the debate is completely a waste of time. All hunters should
be banding together to preserve our hunting heritage instead of fighting one another.

Crossbows, by the way, have been around for
thousands of years--and I'm not just talking
about the Chinese version invented some
2500 years ago. Tribes in South East Asia
have been using a simpler version for
even longer.

So the compound shooters should show more
respect for an ancient weapon since they are
the new boys on the block.

One last point. I believe many of the myths
about crossbows stem from the use of the
word "bolt" instead of arrow for the projectile
shot from this type of bow. Bolts were small
dart like projectiles once--any maybe still--used for target practice. These small projectiles probably gave the impression that
you are shooting something akin to a bullet, but
you are not. I don't know of anyone who has
ever shot a deer or anything else at 100 yards
or even far less.

Let's get this straight. We shoot arrows. They
can be up to 22 inches long, they have vanes,
and are armed with field points or broadheads
just like other archers use. They are propelled not by a powder charge but by a string. Sounds like archery to me.

See, that Jesuit education heavily laden with philosophy and logic is finally paying off!

Yes Mike, you are right; I did study philosophy at another S.J. school, Gonzaga, in Spokane Washington. I think in recent years we had better
basketball teams than Xavier. Gonzaga went to the final four (three years ago if I remember correctly) and lost to UCLA! What a disappointment.
Peace and Best Wishes for successful hunting this year

Exactly! You may notice we never refer to our arrows as bolts, they are way longer. Also, the word "bolt" gives the impression the crossbow is something remote from archery where in fact it is as much archery as any bow out there. This industry seems full of deception and confusion when actually archery is a very simple practice...they all fling arrows with a string.
