string position and condition
string position and condition
Hi everyone. Couple of questions. Some answers can be found from previous posts but wanted some more specific to my situation. When strung my Exocet's string is above the marks for where it should be (String is tighter). It shoots fine is this a problem? Also one strand was cut and a couple show minor fraying is it time to replace it?
The new Excal dacron strings are purposely too short. When left strung they will usually stretch/creep and get longer, finally settling in between the lines. I like the line furthest from the riser (about 1 1/8" back) for my shooting. A little less speed, but quieter! A little beyond that line won't hurt anything, but I don't like to much over 1/4" past.
As for broken strands and/or fraying - REPLACE THAT STRING!!!!!!!!
I'll gurantee it's no fun to have one break even if it flys off harmlessly. What's really painful is if it hits you or a bystander! I've been shooting bows for over 50 years now. Had a string break on a recurve back in the 60's. It broke at the bottom nock at full draw. Cut a welt from my thigh to my neck, and the arrow stuck in the ground (after a few seconds flight time) about 3 feet behind me. Once is all it took for me! Today if a string shows any wear I replace it immediately! If such an event as a dry-fire occurs - a new string is cheap insurance.

wabi is right.
I would be concerned about what caused the strand to break and the fraying. I was testing a string a few weeks ago and noticed a broken strand on it. There was no other damage, so I finished the testing without concern. HOWEVER . . .I had a string that had a broken strand and fraying on a couple of other strands(shortly after getting my Exomax). Being a novice at crossbows at the time, I continued shooting to have the string break. No damage to anything, but, it scared the crap out of me. I found that my string was slapping the riser and the edge of the riser was causing the damage.
If something on your bow is causing the damage, then it needs to be addressed. It's not the same issue I had, the string is too far back to be slapping the riser.
Where is the fraying located? Can you post a picture? How old is the string?
What I'm saying is . . .if the damage is something other than normal wear, then you will have the same problem in a short period of time after replacing the string. Replace the string, but, make sure there isn't an underlying problem.

I'd rather wear out than rust out.

Sorry I should have been more specific the fraying and strand that broke were to my best assumption made by contact with branches walking through the woods. I just wasn't sure if the strength was now significantly compromised. I probably only had around 15 shots on it but have now replaced it and will now be more cautious. Should wax be applied to the entire string?

To be more clear, one strand does not compromise the string. I had another string, a FFF, that I reserved a couple of times with a broken strand folded into the serving. It shot just fine on my Exomax. Same goes for the 32 strand test string that I mentioned in my first post. However, I didn't have additional strands that were frayed.
A broken strand with additional issues, is a different story.
It's always better to lean toward the side of safety.
Mike is right, wax the whole thing.
