Southern Attack Smackdown!
I had a great 3 day weekend of hunting the "primitive weapon" week at a public WMA. My "trusty" (more on this in a bit) H&R Ultra .444 Marlin Handi rifle qualifies since it was designed before 1900 and uses a larger than .38 cartridge.
#1 1/9 I was hunting in some flooded timber in hip boots when a 90 lb. button buck with 2.5" tall buttons came wading through the water. A bang flop hit in the boiler room.
#2 1/10 I was hunting in a dry hardwood bottom, and put a good friend of mine in the area where I killed the previous day. He has MS and was not able to stay in the stand for over a couple hours, so he walked out (unknown to me) about 30 minutes before dark. When he walked out, he pushed a doe and yearling right on top of me. I cocked my rifle, took the mama in my scope and CLICK! I panicked and cocked it again, CLICK! Now both were looking curiously straight at me. I opened the crack barrel to find the primer dented on the Hornady LeverEvoloution cartridge. Now I'm hyperventalating trying to decide what to do. I decide to risk reloading with them looking in my direction. I ease out the misfired round, and fumble around in my fanny pack for another cartridge all while not moving my head or eyes. My fingers finally find what they are searching for and I slowly load and latch my rifle. When the latch clicked they made a quick shuffle and left me with only one shot. But now I could not tell if it was the mama or the yearling? I took the only shot I had left and took a delicious 85 lb. doe.
I have never had a centerfire cartridge misfire in my life. An of course it happens with a deer in the crosshairs! I'll post up my pics as soon as I get them from my friend's iPhone.
If I am not mistaken, these two should put SouthernAttack in the lead!

That sounds like fun to me! Congrats!
Shoot enough and it all happens . . .fortunately not all at once.

Way down south, our rut is just starting. We have one more week of gun, then two weeks of archery, and 4 weeks of archery in a couple districts into the second week in February. I still have 1 doe and 2 buck tags left.VixChix wrote:Congrats! Cool that your season is still on!
I forgot to mention that these are my first public land deer ever.

My son in law had the same type misfire with a similar model rifle (H&R but not the Ultra model) with that same ammunition but his occured at the shooting range. When we examined the bad bullet, we noticed that the primer was seated a bit further in. The firing pin had dented it but we assumed it was not enough to make it fire. Maybe Hornady has some sort of issue with the 444 Marlin ammo. I sent them an email about this but have not heard back from them yet.

its all in fun LOL... we just had a heck of a year with bucks here. It usually goes in 2 year cycles so next year will suk for us im sure.8up wrote:Congrats Kendell on filling the freezer. Like you I didn't realize crazy had killed another doe. I guess you will have to go kill a monster buck with your Excalibur to upgrade lol
its gonna be close for 3-4 teams when all the pts are added though, if everyone tags out for this, it should be a 5-10pt difference if that for most teams
