Great specimen!

I love old trees!

Hard to say from just a pic of a trunk that big, but I'll hazard a guess:

Southern Red Oak?

I'd say it's probably 150+ years old, but it depends on so much:

Species
Temperate Zone
Location
Exposure
Water
Wild vs. Yard Tree

Give us the goods on this fine tree! :D

would make for a nice backdrop for turkey hunting. You could blend right into the bottom where the roots spread 8)

most southern live oaks fork many times in the first few feet of height and their canopy is often much larger in diameter than their height, therefore my guess is a big very old red oak. my $0.02

A couple of weeks ago I went to New Orleans for a little vacation. One day we went on a Plantation tour, the name of the Plantation was Oak Alley. The entrance to the home was lined with giant oak trees, similar in trunk diamater to the one pictured. The guide told us that the trees were approximately 300 years old and had a life expectancy of about 600 years.
