YOUR CLOSEST SHOT EVER?

Post by Grizzly Adam »

'Tis the season for such questions, it seems, so here's another:

What's the CLOSEST RANGE at which you've shot a deer or other big-game animal? :?:

Please give distance, season, animal, weapon, set-up, whether you recovered the animal, and a short story, if you like. Should be interesting! :D

Six feet
NC bow season, Hyde County
Whitetail doe
75 lb. Ferguson longbow
Ground stand
Recovered

I shot and killed one old hussy of a doe from about 6 feet one time in early bow season ... I was standing in an old v-ditch behind a massive loblolly pine ... she entered the soybean field about 100 yards away, worked her way across the field and down it's edge ... right to me. I drew when the tree blocked her vision, and shot when she cleared. 45 yard recovery. :D

One four point at less than 3 feet and one six point walking along the edge of a ditch. I was in the ditch, about 4-5 feet then. Both with the Excalibur of course.

I had one get so close that I couldn't shoot my bow(the arrow would not clear the rail). So, I just slit it's throat with my pocket knife. It's the current state record for deer taken with a 5 inch blade. 8)

I did take a 8 point buck with my .270 from about 5 yards. Funny, I don't have open sights. When I put the scope on the buck, it was just a blurr from that range. I was able to make out the front leg somehow. I could have probably yelled BOO!! and killed that buck via heart attack.
I'd rather wear out than rust out.

my first deer I shot was back in 1997 and was shot with my black excalibur vixed at 5 feet. I was walking in the bush on a rainy day..decieded to check out a known producing apple tree. Stood there for a few minutes and heard something...a doe and her two fawns come walking up. About 10 minutes later...shaking like a leaf, the doe was 5 feet away from me (I could hear her breathing and I am sure she could hear me as well!!!) but due to the rain she was very confused. Landed up double lung/heart shot...she went not more than 30 feet and tipped over. It took me more than an hour to get my self back together before I could go over to her...by far my most exciting hunt to date!!!!

I took a buck that was 2 yards from the base of the tree I was in. I was using my equinox, and I remember it well because I nearly took my thumb off @ the base of my hand because of the string. Despite that thumb whack, it ended up a very decent shot. He went 60 yards and piled.

By the way Grizz, great threads!

Amost forgot, my closest kill was at 5 feet. My neighbor witnessed a deer get hit on the road. He called me to come down and end it for the poor guy. His back half was paralyzed. He expired pretty quickly. I dont really count this as a "hunting kill". Road kill, but still good meat!!

Very close I was sitting against a cedar rail fence and saw a doe walking up the other side, slid my wolverine between the rails and waited until she walked past and as she passed she turned her head to sniff the strange thing sticking out of the fence. Fired and she went maybe 10 yds and piled up. She never really knew what hit her. Nose to bow 6 inches max

I have killed bucks that were sniffing the tree I was in.

I spine shot a buck in 2001 with my Martin Firecat that actually collapsed against the tree I was in.

In 2002 I took a deer Oct.1, opening day, and then went through a dought until heavy snow was on the ground, probably the middle of November. This day, I had been out leaning against a tree since before dawn and since it was way too cold. I finally got up and walked to the back of the 80 acre property. There I saw 3 bucks, who saw me, and we all left the meadow in different directions. Darn.

Discouraged, I walked back to where I was sitting before, and stood there trying to decide if I should go home or stay. Don't you know, but one of those bucks walked past me at 100 yards, turned and crossed in front of me at 40 yards, then walked right towards me, day-dreaming all the way.

I don't know what he was thinking about, but I lost him through the scope at 5 yards distance and closing, I had to shoot in order to stop him from running into me. Musta been 2 yards away when the arrow struck, and I had to jump sideways to let him bolt past me. I was eye-ball to eye-ball with him as he sprang to flee his final 40 yards. That, I'll never forget.

No shot her in the powerhouse. I would never shoot a deer any where else. If you put it through the lungs you will most certainly put her down especially if you nick or cut the aorta. Their BP drops to near zero almost instantly.

LOL... almost the samething for my bow buck last year. I was 14ft up so thats roughly 3yards to the deer straight down. The buck dropped in his tracks and rolled over. Still havent gotten the mount back yet

ive had deer bascially run into my shotgun during dog season. I actaually had to jump out of their way sometimes. If you dont move, the usually dont know you are their, so its a matetr of how close you want them to come. Which reminds me of a young doe I had walk up during a ground hunt during ML'er season 4-5 years ago. She actaully smelled my boot and hopped off LOL
