Which Excaliber Should I Get???

Hi Folks - looking for some advice....

Decided to buy a CrossBow - hopefully will be able to get out deer hunting more with the longer season...

Will be hunting deer mainly, but likely moose as well.

Question - Should I fork out the extra $$ to get the 225lb 'excomax'? Or will the 175lb 'phoenix' ($200 less) be more than enough???

Wondering if the extra 50 or so FPS is worth it/needed.

Im new to archery, but I understand that a 70lb compound bow will send a arrow straight thru the chest of a deer/moose, so is a 175lb crossbow more that enought umph...?

its the speed thing for traj. some ppl love the fastest. with that speed the string wear & serving wear out fairly quick. phoenix is great model & will do everything

here is the easy solution to your problem....

split them and get the Vortex;)

I guess if the Vixen is responsible for a record moose in your country, just about any Excal will get the job done. The less pounds the more often you'll be comfortable cocking it, tho.

Ok, maybe I should be serious. Get the fastest bow you can comfortably handle. The biggest baddest bow will let you shoot a heavy arrow or a lighter arrow giving you the fasted bow and the deepest penetrating arrow. Basically the Exomax will be the most flexibility but of course there are no free rides. The Exomax will be harder on servings, targets and arrows. I don't own one but I'll tell you it is probably the most popular bow Excaibur makes. Personally I like the 200 lb bows, marginally less hard on everything but I can cock it! If I could cock the Exomax easily I would have one. The arrows get there in a hurry! The further down you go in speed of the bow the more reasonable everything is. I don't need a bow as fast as my 200 lb bows but I want it!

The extra speed is for fun. The trajectory is better with the Exomax, but, not a "must have" to kill a moose. I'd have no issues with going moose hunting with my Vixen. Actually, I'd love to go moose hunting with the Vixen.

crazyfarmer's premise logic is faultless but his conclusion is wrong... Get the Exocet!!!

Asked myself the very same question several weeks ago and am thrilled with my selection of the Exocet 200. Joking aside the Vortex would also be a good choice.

BTW, I got my new Exocet off eBay for a winning bid of $350.99.

Got to thinking . . .One other thing to consider is the arrow weight you like to use and the size broadhead you plan to use.

If you are like me and go with a large cut broadhead, then you may want the additional power/speed.

If you like to sling "logs" at those moose and like to make a big hole, then you may very well want an Exomax.

I only hunt whitetail . . .but, if I were going to hunt moose, then I'd probably perfer the extra power to handle my set-up.

My standard advice for hunting bows?

Get the heaviest bow you can COMFORTABLY handle!

If that's the 'Max, you're set for any game.

If that's the Vix', you're good to go too.

I've owned or shot them all. I currently have a Y25 or Exocet depending on which stock is on it, and a Vixen for my son and the little kid in me.

My 1st Excal was the Emax and I loved it, but found it to be a brute, so sent it home to Canada w/ Boo and the boys on there visit here.

The Emax/Enox can best be described imho as: you may want it, but you don't need it, lol.

You can't get a 'wrong' model w/ Excal. Their resale value is exceptional too.
They are like pretty gals, just take one out, lol.

lol.. whichever you can find cheaper would be the best bet;) The only draw back of the 225models are string life, but if you speed you cant go wrong. Ive got whiskers on my 42strand string along with a 460grain bolt and I was shooting 318fps(keep in mind its rated for 350) . With the FFF string and 350grain bolt I was seeing 356fps.

but any you listed will do the job.. I started out with the exocet 200, went to the equinox, and now if I did it over again i'd probably get the vortex

With Excalibur, there are no bad crossbows; All are great and all meet the needs of specific individuals. Read what these knowledgeable folks have written about string wear, speed and weight.

I have just recently set aside my “Other Brand” $1,900 crossbow because at my age. When it is fully field ready, it is much too heavy for me to carry comfortably for long distances. It is a fine bow and as accurate as anyone would ever want, but I am no longer in my 20’s.

Since accuracy, weight, dependability, minimal string wear, cost and indestructibility were my prime considerations; I have just placed my order for a Vixen that has the older model (longer) stock. Speed was not a consideration for me because at 280fps there is not any North American game animal that a Vixen, with this speed, will not produce consistent pass troughs’. With a properly placed shot, more speed only means that the arrow will be driven deeper into the pine tree.

Do your research and purchase the Excalibur that your wallet and your body will be comfortable with for years to come and you will not be disappointed.
