one more sleep
Well I leave tomorrow night for my moose hunting trip in northern Quebec. I am meeting the group at Deux Riviers Ont to catch the ferry to Quebec at 8:00 am on Friday. Should be setting up camp by noon.
It is going to be a great hunt, 6 guys all crossbows. That's tags for 3 moose. All we have to do now is see them and get close enough.

I would love to go on a Moose hunt this year, but maybe next.
Take some pics. We'll be waiting.

Killshot
I hope the temp is a little cooler 60 miles east of me as it was 23c today calling for much the same till end of the weekend and I don't think I could get a moose out of the bush fast enough to stop it from spoiling.
I to am heading to the bush on the 19th and hope it cools a bit or I will have a hard time pulling the trigger on the crossbow in fear of having no edible meat when I get back to North Bay that is about 30 - 40 minutes from where I hunt.
I wish you luck on your hunt.

Bob : I am going to try to find out from some of my old reading materials what the old timers did ... seems they rubbed a coating onto the meat and wrapped it in a clean cloth holding the salt (IIRC) onto the outside...supposedly the meat would stay good a lot longer than you indicated your exit would take... perhaps a thread dedicated to just that would be appropriate.
I will ask the question maybe we will get more info that is useful.. makes sense that a casing on the outside would protect the meat from any bacteria that would make it spoil entering the meat.

The first thing to do is get the carcass temp down and get it wrapped so it stays clean and bug free. Cheese cloth seems to work well.
As for cooling not sure. I know cooling in lake water is a no no. I do have a walk in root cellar to use at the old logging mill but it will be no where near cool enough to keep un-salted meat from spoiling.
Keeping my fingers crossed that it cools down by the time I bag my calf....The wife is now cursing me. She hates the cold.
I will be watching this thread for sure for any idea's.

Deux Riviers is just a turn in the road. The Mad Dog Inn was closed and up for sale last time drove through there and that is about it for lodging unless you have a tent or camper to kip out at the private camp ground or maybe a large vehicle that you can crash out in for a couple of days.
I think the population is maybe 100 including the native reserve people.
My suggestion....drink more beer you will sleep one way or the other.

Shoot I didn't sleep much last night and when I did fall asleep I was late for work this morning. Sure as the sun will rise in the east I won't get much tonight.
The warm weather conserns us as well but we are 6 guys and three trucks so if we get one we will wrap it in cheese cloth then the guys that tag it will load and go making stops for ice on the way.
I will make sure to take pictures and share with you guys and gals.
