reloading 44mag

Post by M&M »

do any of you reload for 44mag I do and have for quite a few years but have always used jacketed bullets and have shot the 270 grn gold dot out of my tc encore for quite a while now, this year I shot a doe at 30yds and I hit her a just a little farther back than I should have, my fault kinda rushed the shot I guess but after a short tracking job I found her and had to put another round in her, the thing I was dissapointed with was the penetraton of the bullet, I want a complete pass through if at all possible so after some research I have decided on a gas checked hard cast lead bullet with a wide flat nose in around 300 gr or so, I found that oregon trail makes one a 310 gr that has gotten great reviews for penetration on big game even on buffalo so I ordered some from midway to try so if anyone has any experience with this bullet and any load recipies they are willing to share as I havent found any load data for this bullet yet, and before you ask no I dont think there is such a thing as overkill dead is dead and this should be a good bullet for any other large game I may choose to hunt

got to love ohio .we can't leave our house in canada with a handgun if not going to a gun club.i still have dies for 44 but have not loaded any for years..i was in a gun shop in akron years ago shooting an uzi in there indoor range and talking gun laws with the guys that worked there they could not beleive they could not hunt moose in ontario with an fn 308 auto.they also said at that time in ohio you could hunt tree rats with a 50 cal center fire if you wanted

I like a full load of 296 Winchester.
Years ago one of my hunting buddies shot a mulie doe broadside with a 210 gr XTP out of a S&W at over 75 yds and the bullet was found perfectly mushroomed, bulging on the offside so it does not make sense that your bullet did not pass through unless there was something wrong with your bullet or load.

I have a ruger red hawk 44 magnum 6" barrel and have taken quite a few deer with it. I use a 240 grain hard cast semi wad cutter bullet designed by Elmer Keith. I use a lyman bullet mold number 429421 and every deer I shot I never lost one and every bullet went clear threw. I am very happy with this bullet.
I am a hunter and proud of it.

I have a marlin 1894 44mag rifle. Its a great little brush gun[easy to carry thru the woods] I shot a doe with my handloaded 300gr XTP.I placed the shot just behind her shoulder, she jumped 15' in the air on the shot and piles up 10yds away.I was using W296.

My brother who has 35 years or so reloading experience does my 240 gr HC gas checked .44 mags and 44 specials (not certain of bullet weight). Next time I email or speak with him I'll ask him about 300 grain loads. Are you looking for a mild, medium or hot load?

Take care...

Why don't you just call Laser-cast? Here's a link to their website:

http://www.laser-cast.com/

It's a good bullet, especially on hogs, haven't used it for deer. Please don't take offense but from time to time we all need to be reminded of one of the CARDINAL rules of handloading: Only use data from reliable published sources. The industry is concerned about the rise in accidents to people using unverifiable data distributed over the internet.

Also, another good source is John Taffin's book on the .44.

Good luck

Warning: Bullet selections are specific, and loads are not valid with substitutions of different bullets of the same weight. Variations in bullet length will alter net case capacity, pressure and velocity. Primer selection is specific and primer types are not interchangeable. These are maximum loads in my firearms and may easily be excessive in others. All loads should be reduced by 10%, and developed following safe handloading practices as represented in established reloading manuals produced by component manufacturers. Presentation of these loads does not constitute a solicitation for their use, nor a recommendation.
