OT Good day turned bad

Post by groundpounder »

My latest thing has been trout fishing from a kayak. I tried a new river to do this on yesterday with a friend and it was a great day until.... I had managed 6 rainbows, 2 bass, and 2 bream while my buddy had caught 5 rainbows. When we were almost at our take out point there started to get to be more and more rapids with a few good drop offs. My buddy was in front of me in his nu-canoe and it proved to be a very stable worthy watercraft. He made it all the way to the bottom and worked his way to the side for me to come on through. Well at the last drop off for me my kayak nosed into a submerged unseen rock which immediately turned me on my side and dumping me and my fly rod into the fast moving stream. The river was high and fast due to some recent rains we've had here. While pushing my kayak to the edge where my buddy is I saw part of my rod drifting down behind me. So I turned and lunged swimming for it but then realized I'm in my waders and they are now completely full of water  So I abandoned that idea and turned back for the bank. I made it out OK but lost my flyrod, sunglasses, and hat  . I walk up a steep rock and lay down with my feet up and head down to drain these gallons and gallons of water out of my waders to state: Fly rod $300, sun glasses $150, new hat $25, for my buddy beside me to chime in: And your buddy there to witness it all "PRICELESS!" I must say I probably would have said the same thing

Ouch... that sounded painful for the pocket book. :(

Back in my long-ago whitewater days (when dinosaurs roamed the earth), we used to call it "making an offering to the river gods"...

Glad to hear you are okay. Not to sound pessimistic, but waders in a boat? Not a good idea dude.

Alot of the time we are going from spot to spot, park the boats and get out and wade fish. Common to see down here.

The rod I lost was just a few months old, still a baby  I think the little lady has put a hold on any spending for a new one right away but I'll keep you in mind. I do have a few back up rods  Do you have a web sight or any pics of some of your rods? Curiosity has me wondering.

It was a 3 month old 6 weight Temple Fork rod and an Orvis Battenkill bar stock reel.

Thanks all. Yes it definitely could have turned out much worse.

Someone else has already mentioned to me about the sacrifice to the river gods

Here is a pic my buddy just sent me of the rapids just before the bigger ones that got me. He's kicking himself for not getting a pic of that one!

I'm looking for a good flyrod but being out of work for 6 weks.....aint gonna happen right now unless you're having a scratch and dent sale. I holler at you when I get caught up  .

Todd, it sounds like it could have been much worse. I'm glad that the only things that were lost are the ones that can be replaced. The water can turn against you real quick as I'm sure you know. Living on the SE Coast of NC, we loose a lot of folks on the water and I'm talking about young, strong, healthy swimmers. I'm sure that Pdslow can attest to that of a young man that worked at a marina between my house and his and went to test drive a boat that had been serviced and about 20 minutes later they found the boat going in circles in the harbour with the young man nowhere in sight. His body was found 2 weeks later. I said all that to say this. We need our friends and mounts so please replace those items lost and be careful out there. That goes for the rest of you that enjoy the water this summer
God Bless !!!!!!!!!

The TFO would be a rod that would be tough to loose. I've heard a lot of good comments about them.

I bought a new Ross FlyStick 6wt this spring & it has quickly become my favorite 6wt.
I have an Okuma 9' 4pc 6 wt that is a great distance/high wind conditions rod (very fast action) and a Scientific Anglers 5/6wt that is a good "close quarters" rod, but the FlyStick will easily do both jobs (close or distance casting). I also have an Eagle Claw 6 wt fiberglass rod for those conditions where it might get some abuse or rough treatment. A cheap rod, but it is rugged and I wouldn't loose any sleep if it was broken or lost.

If you need a "loaner" 6wt, send me a PM.
