A very special hunt

Post by FredBear »

Well yesterday was the second hunt I have took my 8 year old step daughter on. We hunted once last year from the ground. About 1 hour in it. It ended up in a fight. We left after 1 hour after getting there to meet a 150 inch buck face to face... This year she has been on me to take her again. Promising me that she will be quite, and not act like she did last time She has a very busy schedule for an eight year old, and I work on call. So last week we didn't make it happen, but yesterday we got a chance to get out. It was a big rush to make it to the woods. We got to the field got dressed, made her into a miny Ms. Hulk, and sprayed down with scent away.
We got to my tree I climbed up to hang her stand beside mine. She has assured me for weeks shes not affraid of hieghts. This would be her first hunt from a tree. She changed her mind about not being scared at about 8 feet. She toughed through it though and made it into the stand. I got her all fastened in, and she tells me I cant look down or my legs shake. haha I had to laugh. About 30 minutes into the hunt shes feeling better playing her DS. I hear deer running at us. I tell her here they come, and grab my bow. I hear them stop behind us. I asked if she could see them. She points right at them, and says there right there! I cant see them, but they are less than 20 yards away. I then see why they are runnning. A coyote I tell her there is a coyote, and i'm going to shoot it. She starts to cry, because she thinks it's going to get us! By time she was convinced that they cant climb trees it was long gone, but the 2 does where back. I told her where the bigger one was. I could have shot it 3 times, but she wouldnt answer me if she saw the deer. She final nodded her head yes she seen it. So I shot. She was so excited she dropped her DS almost landing on the other doe. I began to laugh as she told me her heart was pounding. She gave me a high five, and says thats where you shoot a deer! She tracked it. I thought she would get grossed out by the field dressing process, but she was very inquizitive about it. Whats that? Does ours look like? Was the question asked about every organ I pullled out. On the way home she told me " we will remember this the rest of our lifes" How does that not make you smile? Have to love a day with so many firsts. I still remember my first experiences hunting and fishing. She's right, neither of you will forget that. My daughter is 3 and a half and my son 9 mos so I have a ways to go yet before I can take them hunting, but I picture it every day.

Way to go, and congrats on the new aspect of your relationship and the fine deer.

As a father of a 9-year old girl, I can't begin to explain how absolutely priceless your story is.

Not to mention the fact that you acheived the nearly impossible. I'm certain my girl would have been asking to go home after 5 minutes or would have screamed at the sight of that coyote!

I try and get my kids out with me a couple times of the year. Only seen deer once during that time but would love to have one there when the trigger gets pulled.
