Custom Wooden Crossbow Stocks
Does anyone have pics of your custom crossbow stock? I am interested in making one for my crossbow and looking for ideas. Thanks!

The first picture is walnut, the rest are white birch stained walnut or oak.

I really like the color of the walnut. Nice stocks. Which type of wood seems to work better for you?
Re: Custom Wooden Crossbow Stocks
Walnut is by the the nicest, most forgiving, easiest to work with wood for gun stocks out there. Cuts and shapes like butter (only thing nicer is cherry!) isn't prone to cracking and checking, is very stable (doesn't shrink and exand as much as other north american hardwoods) and comes with some of the nicest figured grain you will see in any hardwood. Last of all, it takes all sorts of finishes amazingly well...from oil wiping finishes to lacquer it all looks great!

I've never done any work with walnut, it's kinda scarce here in the south. I will have to get my hands on some.

The walnut is about the same weight as the factory stock too.
I'd rather wear out than rust out.

I agree with Scott, the walnut one like this one I made was the easiest of the woods I've tried being Blacknut, Curly Maple and Laminate. As far as being stable its the laminate, Blackwalnut, and Curly maple last. The laminate is the heaviest than the curly maple and the lighttest is the Black walnut. Actually, if you cut it out like frisky's, then I'll bet it doesn't weigh as much as the factory stock. However, I think the weight gives the crossbow some stability, so, I would not go too lite.
The walnut is the way to go. You can't beat the lines on it either.
frisky . . .I like the quilt too.

New folk, keep your eye out for 'Henegar' stocks. Made by Mark Henegar, not available today, he seems to have just dropped off somewhere, but they can be had occasionally. Be quick, they don't last long.

Yesterday I had a chance to get an up-close look at Roland's gorgeous custom stock. On the bow it felt very balanced and fit really nicely! His whole outfit looked great with the gold rail and brown limbs - really sharp. Maybe we can get him to post a photo? Hello - Roland? Are you there?
