I usually work both ends to the middle. The grip is harder to shape so I let everything around it dictate the shape. There is a ton of wood to remove and this pic is making room for the trigger and sliming down the rail. BEFORE;Image

My Dad loved to work with wood and he would have LOVED to follow this thread. I can just about smell the shavings - that smell brings back some of the best of memories. :) What an awesome job! Thanks for taking the time to share it with us all out here in cyberspace!

Your a lucky man Boo, that is quite the artwork in progress!

Aging: your going to have to bring production to a large scale to be able to keep up with demand after this thread!

Cutting the excess off on forearm;Image

Took the butt plate down to 13.25 draw length;Image

I like the look of the forearm and laminate rosewood. That was Don's suggestion. Image

Look from bottom;Image

starting to take shape. Lots of wood to take off yet. Sneaking from both ends to the middle. Shhhh!

Mike, I don't have a clue how you did the cut between the forearm and the trigger guard????? Can you explain what you did?

The cut between the trigger guard and forearm was started in the begining with the rough cut out of the stock blank with the bandsaw being carefull to safe a safe distance from the rail cutout. After that I use may eye and spindle sander and take it down to about a 1/4" thickness of wood left between rail and outside curve. Between the trigger guard and forearm is wasteful weight to me so I try to elimate it. Any weight elimated is a good thing. By the way your stock is going to be light. :)

I'm learning a lot watching the old master. My next stock will be easier from what I've seen. My wallet will also be lighter after buying some of the tools Mike has. What kind of wood is that on the butt and forend? Must be tropical stuff. Gary

Yup, Gary your wallet will be considerably lighter but the up side is you will have less back problems so they say. The wood I put on the butt and forearm is a birch laminate in a rosewood stain. It has its advantages and disadvantages. Its does is the most stable as far as warp goes. The stain is all the way through the wood. It is also the heaviest of the woods I use. Nothing is perfect.
And, most importantly, I may have mastered old but am not an old master.  :D Thanks for the kind words Gary.
