serving seperation

Post by new2xbow »

Is there a way to reverse serving seperation?, it is one spot just off to the right of the center, the serving is still tight not trying to unwind just spreading cleanly wetween 2 wraps. Is there a way to repair it? is it really an issue?

String probably has about 70 or 80 shots on it.

If it's separating at the trigger claws or where it rides the rail, then it could damage your string.

I have had luck with waxing it heavy, then pushing the serving back together, then turning the string over . . .switch the loops from one end to the other . . .however, that fix is usually temporary. I have gotten as many as 90 more shots after doing that trick.

It's probably best to reserve the string.

Push the separation over to one side and fill it in with dental floss (non scented if you hunt). It is a temporary fix and will extend serving life in a pinch.

Serving that is wound opposite the direction that the bow string is twisted will separate easier than one that tightens as the bow string is twisted BUT no practical way to permanently fix it other than getting the sting re-served correctly. Shooting a string whose serving is separated can ruin the string if the strands of the string itself start to chafe.

With all due respect to someone that knows alot more about crossbows and strings than I do, I would go buy serving thread to fix it, used dental floss to tie my peep on my hoyt bow and I suspect thats what broke a string this past Sunday. Broke where I had a knot tied. Best to search how to serve a string or take it to someone who knows how to do it.

If and when i reserve it myself it will be with serving string. This literally looks like the string was kinked. The open spot isn't touching anything while cocked or at rest. maybe i was not waxing enough. Hence why i bought a spare, i am still in the learning curve. Once i get my serving jig made i may just write this one off and use it as serving practice, serve it in 4 or 5 spots then take em off and do it again until i am comfortable with it.

Reserving the string is actually easier than it looks. Even building the jig is relatively simple.

You can do it, we can help. :)

With factory strings that happened to me a bit earlier on. I done what sumner said and forced the serving back once and it worked. But another time it caught me out and damaged the string on the following couple of shots.
better to get it reserved if unsure than damage the string.
It's definately worth learning to serve them yourself. I learned from these good fellas on the excal site, and there's a Boo tutorial online to get you going. I've never had one seperate since then. Thanks guys.

Check out the bottom of the page by Boo. I built his jig and followed his instructions.

Try putting more twists in the string. When I put more twist in my string it was just under the mark closest to the shooter.

Not just more twists but more twist (in the same direction) as the serving is wound. Twisting opposite of serving wind actually loosens the serving.
