Hypothetical "Dry Fire" question

So...let's say a new owner - caught up in the way their new Vortex is slinging bolts at 40 yards - forgets to load a bolt and pulls the trigger. After having the crap scared out of me..err them, the find the string laying 15 feet away.

I restrung, tried to get my brace hight close to where it was, check for any obvious damage and started shooting again.

I noticed two things - one, my point of impact changed by a couple of inches, two- I don't seem to be shooting as consistant as I was prior to blowing the string off the bow?

Is it ok to continue to use this string (no damage I can see)? Will the bow settle back in and I will regain my groups?

Anything else I need to check or tweak?

Maybe I just need to set it down awhile and let my nerves cool.

These things are just so addictive!

For me... I wouldn't reuse the same string for fear of damage that you couldn't see.

I would check the limbs with a cotton ball to check for tiny splinters.

Well, went back down and looked at the bow real close under some good light. There appears to be very small "fractures" on the left limb - no idea if they were there before the deadly sin was committed. Is this something I need to be concerned about or is this just from normal shooting? They do not appear very deep and do not appear to be getting any larger.

Do your hypothetical inspection with the limbs cocked and the safety on. Also, hypothetically load an arrow before shooting or uncock manually.

There are some hairline cracks formed in the layer of camo which are normal. Cracks from a hypothetical dry-fire will be more severe.

Check all screws . . .in a hypothetical dry-fire, the screws can come loose, especially the ones associated with the scope or sights. Anyway, tighten all screws.

Those are normal lines in the limbs from the manufacturing process. They are fine. Deep spinters should be a concern only. Small splinters can be lightly sanded out.

Feels great to be part of such an elite group!! I did the cottonball test, no snags. Did check all screws, everything is tight.

Did change to a new string, just to be safe (thanks Scott!) and oh my what a difference. I thought the old sting was ok because the brace height remained stable. Put when I put the new one one I had to shorten my stringer thing to get it to reach and the loops were a bear to get over the mag tips even though the old ones fell right off - definately stretched. The loops looked huge on the old string (maybe 150 shots on it) and the serving was coming apart, so no worries.

After waxiting it up I sent five bolts down range (one at a time of course) and you could have covered all five holes in the one ince orange dot w/a quarter!!

Lesson learned, dry-fire proabably cost $20 for a new string!
My baby is back!! No more screwups for this chump - at least not today!!

Thanks everyone, I bought an Excalibur becasue I know its a great bow - and I had been lurking here an knew it was a good bunch of helpful folks that could steer me in the right direction!

All kinds of room here. When I did it I did it good. I ruined that string which was almost new. Thank god and a forum member for the NGSS system and Excalibur, I had no broken limbs on my Equinox. No sooner had I put on the new string, I fired and guess what. Another dry fire. Ruined another brand new string. But no broken limbs. So that means that my NGSS system and my Excalibur was worth its weight in gold as well as good friends on this forum. Thanks guys.

i had the STS damper system on mine when i popped into the club with a boo string on my exocet....destroyed the rubber bumpers on them, but my boo string was just fine and stayed on the limbs .........bob

I,m the newest member to the club..boy was i surprised glad i had the s5,s with new pads (thanks Mark)just slightly louder and a little more vibration..but that was with the flemish super string..checked everything and gave the string 2 twists and was back at the target..but to be honest i grinned when it was over thinkin how tough the excals are..poor fellers on another forum having a bad time with high tech bows stayin together just sittin in a tree..i think i,m naming the bow (Buff) tough as a buffalo
