Some of you hunt turkeys. I hunt chickens. Not Quite ready yet.
Edited: Actually they are about four days old there, they were two days old when we picked them up.
Theses are 2 day old meat birds that we picked up on May 13, 2012. There are13 meat birds in that batch. They are fairly cheap to buy at a $1.50 each and are fairly cheap to raise and at ten weeks are ready to kill. Some kill them sooner than ten weeks but I keep them for the maximum amount of time so that I get the maximum amount of weight before they start getting to heavy to stay on their feet.

Teaching my grandson Landon how to raise his own chickens.

Come Sunday, July 1, they will be 7 weeks old. Three more weeks and they will be ready for the chopping block. Come Monday, July 23 they will be in the freezer. We have about a half and half mix this year of hens and roosters. Hens usually weigh between 6 lbs to 71/2 lbs, and the roosters usually weigh between 71/2 lbs to 91/2 lbs. That will give us our chicken for the winter. Other than a little bit that we buy if see a really good special at a store for chicken legs and such. No comparison in flavor between a home raised chicken and a store bought chicken. Give me a home raised chicken any day. I will take some photos tomorrow to show you how big they are now and will try and find my scales to weigh one to see how much they weigh now.
Thank you,
Raymond
