Birds

Post by Raymond »

Hey Folks,

Some of you hunt turkeys. I hunt chickens. Not Quite ready yet.

Edited: Actually they are about four days old there, they were two days old when we picked them up.

Theses are 2 day old meat birds that we picked up on May 13, 2012. There are13 meat birds in that batch. They are fairly cheap to buy at a $1.50 each and are fairly cheap to raise and at ten weeks are ready to kill. Some kill them sooner than ten weeks but I keep them for the maximum amount of time so that I get the maximum amount of weight before they start getting to heavy to stay on their feet.

Come Sunday, July 1, they will be 7 weeks old. Three more weeks and they will be ready for the chopping block. Come Monday, July 23 they will be in the freezer. We have about a half and half mix this year of hens and roosters. Hens usually weigh between 6 lbs to 71/2 lbs, and the roosters usually weigh between 71/2 lbs to 91/2 lbs. That will give us our chicken for the winter. Other than a little bit that we buy if see a really good special at a store for chicken legs and such. No comparison in flavor between a home raised chicken and a store bought chicken. Give me a home raised chicken any day. I will take some photos tomorrow to show you how big they are now and will try and find my scales to weigh one to see how much they weigh now.

Thank you,
Raymond

I can testify to the size Raymond . As a teenager I used to catch chickens . The broilers were not bad but catching the 14 week old ca-peons was tiring .

Used to raise a few chickens too. Some for the freezer and some for the eggs. Fresh eggs and poultry...YUMMY!! :)

Them there birds can't get far' I have my mind made up on using my crossbow on one of them. I couldn't manage to get after a Thunder Chicken so I am going to find out what it is like to use a crossbow on a bird, :) . I will have a camera rolling when I do this backyard hunt, . I am curious to see what kind of damage I can do on the head.

Yeah it is tough to beat fresh eggs and fresh poultry. But to get out there in the woods after one of those thunder chickens will be a lot more exciting than killing a domestic chicken, that is for sure.

Thanks,
Raymond

I shot a rooster w/ my xbow! Tired of his sh*t. It was beautiful. I put some corn out at 20 yds and tested a turkey rig on him. Slick followed by a grappler.

He did one flip and was dead when I walked up on him. He was a big ol drink of water..................

We have 56 meat birds this year, 20 of them is for the inlaws. We feed them for 8 weeks and last year they were 7 to 8lbs and put the store bought chickens to shame.
they are 7 weeks now and I'm off to the feed store today to get some more grower and looking to mix it with maybe oats to finish them off.
Maybe you have another idea other then oats?
This is our 4th year with meat birds and can't see buying chicken again from the store....

Hey MB5200,
We have always had fresh chicken, nothing like it. When I was living home my Dad always raised our own meats and vegetables. Dad and Mom only bought what they had to from a store.

My birds are 7 weeks now. I keep them for 10 weeks and I feed them a bag of cracked corn mixed with the grower the last week before I slaughter them. I have never feed them oats before. Next year I will divide them into two groups and feed half with grower and oats to finish them off. I have always raised my own chickens for 28 years. I used to raise my own beef and pork also until my back went to pieces. Nothing like your own fresh raised animals. I used to raised 50 meat birds a year and 50 turkeys a year but have had to scale back to just what I need for our own use now.

They are quite content, they have their bellies full and are laying down relaxing and adding on the weight. That makes me happy, :) .
