Friday night I headed out to public land spot where I have been seeing deer - and where I got busted on Tuesday night. I got there at about 5:00 and milled around a bit trying to fond the right spot to setup. After finally picking a place to sit, I realized I forgot my leafy wear as I wanted to wash it and took it out of my pack. Oh well, nothing to do but hunt at that point. I wasn't seated for 5 minutes when a deer comes in from behind me - again the wrong way - you would think they'd learn by now where they are supposed to walk - and gets into the thicket. I figure it's over but he eventaully turns and stops in an open spot 30 yards away. I'm looking at him through my scope, and am resting on a monopod. I can see about 1/2 the width of the front leg and back, and figure I can make that shot. Subconsciously I must have aimed back a bit, and he was quartering to me just a bit. I let 'er fly, heard the smack and watched him run as far as I could (20 yards). I thought it was a good hit, so I went to look for the arrow. It was buried in a tree 5 yards behind where the deer was. Swhacker blades are fine, but the ferrule broke and the trocar tip is in the tree. Maxima Hunter arrow looks fine too. I hosed it off and will see how the feathers look now that they are dry - probably needs a refletch. Anyway, I smell the arrow - seems OK - look around and see the deer 30 yards away. Good deal. Go pack up, and head up to field dress him. Again, the Butt-Out tool worked great, and the guts looked fine, but the chest cavity was full of dark blood, and some bits of vegitation. After I get it all out, I definately hit the liver, and must have just nicked the stomach. Anyway, I got him all cleaned out and cut up and in the 'frige. I'll do the grinding today. Had some backstrap last night - wow.......
pics aren't too clear
arrow in tree
exit wound - too far back - deer quartered toward me
