What do you use ....

Post by taz3 »

To get your fallen deer out of the woods and what do you use, if anything?

I know from my Dad moose hunting over the years they have tried a few methods. The latest is a 12" aluminum boat cut in half and rejoined. It's easier to handle this way and allows the moose to be carried over wet areas, plus it slides easily across the ground with the added plastic strips on the bottom side.

Two things I use and found then invaluable:

The first is a two wheeled collapsible game cart from Cabelas. It get deer out easily, even down corn rows.

The second is a plastic game carpet/sled (also from Cabelas) and not very expensive, that makes pulling out a deer quite easy, especially over snow. It rolls up easily and stores out of the way.

I like to use my Honda 400 Foreman ATV. However never have it with me when I get a deer! :(

So I always bring the game cart now...

Shot a doe yesterday. Gutted her. Grabbed fronts legs and started walking. She followed behind. A month or so ago I shot a 200 lb buck. Pulled out cellphone and called a young guy. He came and did 75% or so of the dragging using the antlers as a handle. I pretended to help by huffing and puffing very loud.

On a side note: Why do large bucks always die downhill of where I need to go? :?:

I use the deer drag strap that comes with the Hunter Safety System Pro Series harness and use it as designed. Now I never leave home without my safety vest even if I'm hunting from the ground. It is also my deer drag and hunting vest. The vest is way more comfortable than using a rope and/or handle and you still have both hands free. The HSS Pro Series is a good safety vest, but its an even better deer drag in my opinion.

We use a sled like tobbogan - cheap from most any Kmarts- plus when shoving bears and deer down hills; we add the weeeee weeeee noise just for sport and a hand cart ; & this year I bought myself a Yamaha Grizzly 700.

Makes it alot more fun hunting too !!!

A great investment - acknowledging my advanced years and conditioning dimise !

If I'm lucky I can use my uncle's Honda 4 wheeler. Otherwise I drag it out on my Pelican ice fishing tobogan hooked up to my fall harness drag loop.
I'm hoping to have one of those handy dandy game carts for next season. :)
