Yep. No double lung shot deer will go over 100 yards. If you are tracking up to 200 yards you are not placing your arrows correctly. I have only shot one deer that I got a single lung hit on. I let it bed down and waited about 5 hours to track it. It was still alive when I located it so I had to shoot it again.

What i do is look where the bolt will exit the deer .I aim for that no matter how high you go .Ive not had any issues this way .
Sounds like you are aiming for your point of impact ,thats might be why you lose deer .The shot is on as deadly as your bolts hits.

poi is good ,but shoot for the opposite side where it will exit .If the shot cant be made dont take it ,I know a few folks that lose deer for this reason. They shoot for what they think is a good lethal shot, from the side or quartering away shot

Swackers are my favorite in mec . One wrap of black electric tape is usually good for 4 or 5 practice shots Bolt cutters shoot good on the fixed side

Chris Dillard wrote:Thanks guys, alot of great tips. The areas I'm hunting are vast expanses of hardwood bottoms with anywhere from 2 inches to 2 feet of standing water everywhere. There are small islands from 1/4 of an acre to 40 acres in size. These high spots are serious deer magnets. I normally wear my hip boots or chest waders to access and hunt these areas, several trophy class bucks running around these spots that would score in the 150's. When I stick one seems like I get good hits and very good blood trails out to about 100 to 200 yards then I end up loosing them in the water. I think going with a quality mechanical and doing some serious practice from an elevated stand is going to be the ticket to get back to harvesting deer. Leaning towards the Shwackers or Wasp Jackhammers. Please feel free to continue to make suggestions on Mechanicals. Thanks again.
Never lost a deer with a jac hammer - use 2 o rings for xbow-stands where 12-16 ft.

Thanks fellas, I believe I'm going to be successful this year with all the great input. I can see where I made some errors on my part by not thinking about some of the basics of Bow Hunting. I have harvested approximately 20 deer with a vertical bow and around 10 with my Exomax, that's why I was so devastated the last 2 years not to recover a single deer from the 4 trophy bucks I stuck. Anyways going to do some serious practice in the coming weeks. I will post my results from the range and the bush. Alabama's archery season starts October 15 :D

Chris,
I does not seem to me like you have any issues with your arrow setup since you are getting passthrus on big deer (am I right on the passthru thing?). As others have said it seems to be a placement issue from the high tree stand. My two (or 4) cents is this:

Have you ever thought about sitting on the ground with a ghille suit? Quite a rush when a big boy is in bow range and it will maximize your target area. Not to mention lets you be mobile and you don't have to haul a stand.

I am a fan of heavy, high FOC arrows with a fixed blade - Slick Tricks being a favorite as 4 blades get better penetration than 3, but if I had to shoot a mech. it would be the 125 gr Swhacker. The youtube videos comparing it to many other heads are pretty compelling. I shot 2 deer with them last year and all went well, even on one marginal hit.

That is the key for me. What will happen on a marginal hit? Almost anything will punch clean through on a perfect broadside double lung hit. But what happens if you hit a shoulder blade or something? Thats why I stick with heavy arrows and fixed blades. And if you are shooting at big deer..............

This may seem trivial but I didn't start loosing deer until I switched from the Flemish Fast Flight String to a standard Dacron string. This could be one of the MANY elements that I need to look at.

String material won't cause any diff in function of yer Excal other than one type maybe faster or slower than the other. This Vixen has carved tip limbs & a flemish dacron string shot was about 28 yds

Vixenmaster, I am really leaning toward putting a magnified crossbow scope on the Exomax as well going back to the FFF string for flatter shots. I hit 41 last January and my vision is not what it once was, how do you like your scope? Nice pic by the way!!

Do you use the Slick Tricks more often than Swackers?

This will be my 1st time usin swhackers, i do use RazorTricks alot. I was on a hog hunt 2 yrs ago Danny Miller came down & we all went to Ark. then over to OK. fer the Hunt. Danny shot thru a 3/4 plywood into a Rhinehart 18-1 & it were buried up 8-10" offhand shot at 20 yds almost dead center. Think i will try them out. I have 2 paks of the 2" 100gr
