Aluminum shaft prep for fletching?

Post by lswoody »

I have some experience fletching carbon shafts but have not done any aluminum. Got a friend that needs some fletched. Can I use finger nail polish remover and 50% alcohol to clean the aluminum shafts without removing the arrows finish? How do you guys do it? Thanks!!!

So acetone is not needed?

Correct. It does help, but is not necessary.
The lowest percentage isopropyl alcohol I'll use is 70%, if you can find 90, even better.

Never clean mine. Just scrap off old with sharp knife and glue on new ones with Lapage super glue ultra gel. Could fire them through a piece of wood and vanes don`t come off. Not cheap for the glue but either is hunting.

Ajax on a rag rinsed off well with really hot water works.

The preparation depends on the glue being used.

For the old "fletchtite" I used for years it was best to crest dip the shaft in lacquer.
When I tried a new "super glue" I had problems with the glue not sticking to the lacquer. Found a simple wipe down with alcohol was all that was needed.

I wipe down my Easton aluminum 2219 shafts with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol then wrap with 3 1/2" wraps.

I use the Arizona EZ bolt fletcher with Bohning 2" Blazer vans and Bohning fletch tite platinum glue.

The fletcher cleans up easy with a toothpick to remove the dried glue.

Ok, I don't do any cresting. Have been using Gorilla Super Glue on carbon. Will this glue work on aluminum?
