Buck Fever @ Age # 50?

Post by SALTYDOG »

Hello all, went out yesterday morning. Went to put up my climber...and forgot my harness  So said to self, I'll hunt from the ground. Found a good lay down, got behind it ,and not more than 10min. a giant #14 point non-typical buck comes by ....with-in 60 yard's of where I am, he turn's and walks' the other way . I use my grunt call, he turn's around and comes right to me...about 40-48 yard's. his head is high, smelling the air as he make's his way to me. About 30 yard's, I aim at him w/the Phoenix....And start to shake (Uncontrollable).....What the Frack is going on with me! As I think, to myself...I'm I having a stroke? Mental break down?. Just then the Huge Buck of ..my life time see's me, and blow's a big wad of snot out of his nose and haul's arse the other way...into the next county! Now I have harvested over #43+ Deer with a gun/ compound bow and 4 does w/crossbow. I'll turn # 50 yr's old in March...The last time I had Buck Fever...I was #12...shot my first # 8 point Buck with Grandad's 30-30 Winchester.

Doing it on the ground is a real rush ain't it?!?!

Sorry it didn't work out, I feel your pain as it's the story of my life; I have been within bow range of many P&Y bucks and at least 5 Booners in the last 8-10 years, all but two totally unaware of anything out of whack, and as of yet the shot has never panned out!

Best of luck, you're doing things right to have had the chance!

It happens. One thing for sure is, by not shooting you know he was healthy the last time you seen him. Hate to see the yotes get him! Best of luck!

great story .. its a funny thing I have had good deer come in and not phase me a bit and I have had deer come in that I knew I wasn't going to shoot and have to calm my self.
I couple of years ago I missed a doe be cause of it .don't know why she had me so messed up..
if I lose that feeling I probably stop huntin.
good luck and I hope you get another chance at him..you know hes there now.

 Its happens to some ppl. The longer i watch one, while i am trying to get a shot the more intense i get, gettin pumped. I get the shakes after my shots & i jus take my time lowerin my stuff down to the ground. Then find the arrow & blood trail

Don't feel too bad Saltydog, it happens. I try to visualize my practice target and not think of it as a deer, keep telling myself it's just a target, done this before, it's just a target... sometimes it even helps lol
I never want to get to the point where it's 'ho hum, I shot another deer'. When it's no longer exciting I might quit hunting.
