Matrix Mega 405 scope

Post by mchurch »

What scope is everyone using on their Matrix Mega 405? I have being considering the Leupold VX-R hog scope. It looks like a great option.

Depends on what you want to do with it :?: Do you want to just hunt with it or do you want to shoot flies  I have a Tact Zone on mine and am happy with that Im not gonna shoot anything smaller than a Whitetail and no farther than 40 to 50 yards so Im content with the tact zone :)

I liked the Tact Zone. I sold it to gent here, and he is still using it from what I know. Like JP said, for hunting purposes, it is great. If you do decide to change, there are a bunch of good ones to choose from for $100. on up.
Good luck

I just put the VX-R duplex fire dot on my 380 and love it. I think your VX-R hog scope would be a perfect fit. I think you would be very happy with it.

I can see (hope) Excalibur revisiting the idea of contacting Leupold to discuss a new Crossbones model with a preferred firedot reticle and pairing it with their upcoming 2015 crossbow offering.

I went with the Hog scope and here was my thinking.
It's shorter so although not important I think it looks better.
It's lighter by a moderate amount. 360.00 g vs 326.00 g
While the Hog scope is not as bright as the 2X7 VXR it is more than bright enough.
My center crosshairs are set at 30 yards, the third reference mark down is 40 and the top of the lower reticle could be used for 50 yards.

It sounds like that Hog scope might be my best option. I have seen it for as low as 450 dollars shipped.

There are 2 Hog scopes. One is a 30mm tube which I have and the 1". I find that the 30mm tube in low power configurations gives a faster target acquisition.

How is it not as bright? Isnt yours a 1-4x? At 1x with the 30mm tube you get an exit pupil of 30. 2-7x 32? has an exit pupil of 16. I know that exit pupil is not the only factor in determining brightness, but in scopes of same manufacture and model I think it pretty much is.( glass the same, coatings the same, etc.) I'm not trying to be a smart a$$ but I dont follow. :?:

Paul, I am certain that Boo has both the 1-4 and 2-7 VX-R and side by side he sees the 2-7 brighter at low light.

Yep, I'll bring them both with to Booville so you and Paul  can look down the tubes.
Paul, I know that the max pupil size is 7mm and both scopes exceed 7mm at exit as well both use VXR glass. But when you look at night, using ambient city light you can see more with the 2X7.

Believe it or not  I have a few Leupold scopes and can bring them along for low light viewing if anyone is interested. I have the VXR 2X7, a Shotgun scope, the Hog Scope, a VX-III 1.75X6X32 and a 1.25X4X24 Elite 4200.
Anyone interested in comparing?

Exit pupil = The effective diameter of the objective lens ÷ Magnification

Exit at pupil of the 1X4X20mm at 2 power is 20mm
Exit at pupil of the 2X7X33mm at 2 power is 16.5mm
Max pupil opening is 7mm
Exit at pupil of the 1X4X20mm at 4 power is 5mm (less than max pupil opening)
Exit at pupil of the 2X4X33mm at 4 power is 8.25mm (more than max pupil opening)
Although the number appear like a big difference, my perceived difference is not great. Maybe my eyes are crap at 60 yrs of age

LOL! I just realized why I can't see a real difference! DUH!
I'm using my Hog scope at 3X so exit at pupil is 6.666mm and of course max pupil is 7mm. Almost as bright as my eyes can handle. Exit at pupil for the 2X7X33 at 3 power is 11mm.
Am I losing anyone?
