Re: Advertised Speed?
Randy, do yourself a favor, shoot the bow until whichever string you're using settles in completely. I've seen 5 to 8 ft/sec gained from allowing the string to settle. If you're using a Flemish string, there will be a loss unless you're using something like Danny Miller's 24 strand Dynaflight string.randyxx75 wrote:Finally got a chance to chrony the Matrix 380 with a 350 grn. arrow and got 369?, is this normal or is my chrony off?
If you are interested what speeds your bow is spitting out a 350 arrow at, check it on a couple of chronographs. One of the shops that I deal with had their chronograph out by 15 ft/sec. I've also found that using an indoor lighting system is better than using a chronograph outdoors.
There are lots of things that can affect chronograph readings. We had a good thread awhile back on chronographs and variables and if I can find it, I'll post it. I think Keith (nchunterkw) who is a mechanical engineer has much to say about the correct use of a chronograph.

My 380 and 405 equipped with the baddest of the baddest ever made strings by Mr Boo are probably over there guestimated speed

Hey Swamp, how you doing? Glad the splinters are working well for you buddy!
The chronographs have many variables associated with their use. Light sources are probably the largest contributor to inaccurate readings. I have found that angling the chronograph to match the pitch my arrow path is taking towards the target, and shooting about the same height over the pickups gives the most consistent, and repetitive readings on the Pro Chrono PAL model. I also don't use it outside on sunny days.

Re: Advertised Speed?
After I tag out this year I'm going to check the speed on my 405. I am shooting 507 grain bolts and expect it to be somewhere in the 340-345 range.

I got 408 out of my 410. But only after about 75 shots. I still haven't chronoed my other bows.

Re: Advertised Speed?
I think my 380 is under a little but the deer I shot the other day didn't say anything
jokes aside advertised speed is very misleading on most if not all bows and crossbows ive seen..
Excalibur's speeds are as close advertised as it gets ..
when your talking only 11 fps..it could be a chrono issue or brace height, string variables , and of course limb variables. whats a few fps amongst friends

Re: Advertised Speed?
I am sure excal has done their research but I am of the opinion that 350 grains is too light for the "hyper bows." Just a gut feeling but I'll bet that if people shot heavier bolts than the number of tip failures would decrease. Plus there is less vibration and it's less noisy.Boo wrote:Geeez Joe, you're shooting Mack Trucks, not arrows!Species8472 wrote:After I tag out this year I'm going to check the speed on my 405. Plus you never know when Sasquatch will show up and better be loaded to the max when that happens.
