Sunday morning got into the woods just at daylight and up in my stand. Super windy and cold. I can only see about 30 yards from this stand into some thick stuff where 3 trails come together.
It was so windy, I'm thinking I will be getting down real soon but decided to stick it out. About 8:45 (time before turning back clocks). I look up and see a decent size deer in the trail at 15 yards.
I didn't take any time to study the deer just grabbed my cb off the hook and lined up behind the shoulders with the first cross hair (didn't turn on the illuminated reticule feature on my XB30 either as it happened so fast).
Took a shot and it all happened so fast; the sound of the bow and the whack into the deer seemed to happen at the same time. I heard the deer take a few leaps out of sight and then crash down.
Got down and walked over to where it ran. I paced off 18 steps to where it was laying. It was a decent sized spike and wow what a fantastic feeling.
After field dressing the deer, one of my friends came over to help load it on the ATV. We searched for about 10 minutes and found the arrow. Just the back 3 inches were sticking out of the ground and I was only able to see it because of the white blazer vanes. Since the arrow is 18 inches it went 15 inches into the ground after passing through just behind and above the left shoulder of the deer and angling out the ribs on the opposite side.
Quite impressive performance from the Matrix.

Re: Part 2 - NY hunt - success
Thanks for the kind words. Learned a lot from the experts on this board and learned some more from my own failings (see earlier post about rough start on Saturday).
I make extra sure now to continually check to see that my arrow is pushed back tight and loaded properly now.
The friend that helped me with the deer was amazed at the way the arrow went through a very thick part of the deer and buried deep into the ground.
The arrow and the carbon express 100 grain quad pro were still good to go again. I sharpened the blades on the broad head after cleaning the dirt out of it. I will use the arrow for practice as the front of one of the fletchings had a very small tear in it and I super glued it together and put some scotch tape over the super glued part.

Congrats on deer. Where are you in NY? It was windy and cold here too. As a matter of fact, after about 3 1/2 hrs in the stand on Sun., I heard this loud cracking sound and watched a 100' tree topple over about 80 yds in front of me. I figured it was time to leave when trees start falling over.
