Do you need a p.a.l. To hunt with a crossbow?

Post by gregtsuperfly »

I was told by a friend today that you need a possession license to hunt with a crossbow in Canada? Is this true?

NO!

A crossbow is NOT a Firearm under our Laws.

Of more interest to you being in Saskatchewan is whether you can use one in standard archery seasons. Methinks not, but the regs are somewhat convoluted in this regard over there from what I can recall...

there was talk about it years ago. I still have my first p.a.l after the f.a.c was scraped and it has non-restricted/restricted/crossbow as endorsements on the back of it. thanks god it never came to be.
so no you don't need it to buy or hunt with a crossbow.

No p.a.l. required but if you were born after Jan 1, 1971 you will have to pass the hunters safety course to hunt in Saskatchewan. The Prince Albert, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw\Regina WMZ’s have crossbow and archery seasons combined. There are other zones that have them combined with muzzleloader as well. Some draw seasons are combined with rifle. So make sure you check the reg’s for the zone and species you are hunting. Only six days left till mule deer opens and it looks like its going to be a good season here! :D

I cant comment on the Saskatchewan/ontario licensing.

When I went for my hunting course I went for the PAL as well due to the fact that the current govt was leaning towards it being required for crossbow ownership. Govt changed and it was no longer needed. But I am glad I have my pal because it led to another love.

get if you can. Govt's change.

I am not sure if hunter safety courses are province specific but the address below is the recognized program. There are links for each province so there may be differences in each province.

http://www.huntercourse.com

This is the contact page for Sask Environment. Maybe give the field office in the area you want to hunt a call and they can help you out.
