Roly, I think this has been general consensus since I've been on the forum. This is eye opening.roly wrote:If you lengthen your brace height, you are shortening your power stroke, wouldn't that cause a loss in speed?
I always thought if you shorten your bh you would gain some speed because you added to your stroke.

Re: Bow not as fast as you thought?
These limbs stack a the start, where the old limbs didn't. So limb loading characteristics between the old and new bows is very different. At 2 7/8" Danny couldn't cock the bow. That would be a real non-issue with your Equinox.roly wrote:If you lengthen your brace height, you are shortening your power stroke, wouldn't that cause a loss in speed?

Ok, starting to understand .
Do you think the numbers would be the same for my micro ?

I think those numbers give you a starting point. Roly, come down for dinner and you can use my chronograph or you can just come down and borrow one of mine.roly wrote:Ok, starting to understand .

Re: Bow not as fast as you thought?
I found optimum speed with my Phoenix with more brace height then I expected. I'd have to dig through my notes, but I think I've had it just shy of 310 fps.

Re: Bow not as fast as you thought?
I noticed that with the new dead zone scope that Excal sent me getting the scope dialed in was much harder than expected this fall (for various reasons). I shoot the stock bolts that came with the Aluminum rail Axiom and 100 grain broad heads/field points with a custom string by Vixenmaster with a brace height set to just shy of the half way point between the scribe marks on the rail. It took me a fair while to figure out that the speed ring set at 300 FPS was set way too high even though that bow is rated 305 FPS with the 100 grain field points and Flemish dyna-flyte string I currently have that ring set to almost the minimum setting to get the crossbow sighted in for all ranges up to 60 yards. I am NOT overly worried just a little surprised at the speed I am getting. mind you the speed ring my not be accurately calibrated and they may have been using a large brace height to achieve the 305 speed. I would not think that the great string VixenMaster sent me would be the cause of the low speed I would think that if anything it would be faster than the flemish dyna-flyte string, but I have no clue on that one. regardless I am happy with the speed and accuracy of the bow and just glad I have a great bow setup.
When I bought the Axiom I was buying an Excal that I believe would be a great all around bow for a reasonable cost and that is what I got. Still have not shot at a deer yet, but you cannot win them all(you actually have to see a deer). I am confident as long as I get the range estimation right I can easily hit any target at normal shooting ranges in the field. I know next season I will probably be hunting more with the crossbow and less with the rifle as hunting pressure during gun season has been much higher in the last three years.

You cannot rely on the speed ring as an indication of arrow speeds. Also, expect anywhere between 10 to 15 ft/sec speed loss for most Flemish strings.

Re: Bow not as fast as you thought?
When as you lengthen the BH you are also raising your preload on the limbs, to an extent, so imagine that is also at full draw and giving slightly higher draw weight??roly wrote:If you lengthen your brace height, you are shortening your power stroke, wouldn't that cause a loss in speed?

I have found from 3/4 to 1" less than anything shown here over 1" but as I shortened my BH I was also lightening the amount of preload on the limbs at rest. My guess is you would decrease the draw weight at full draw also,, might put it on a draw board and see,

Don, adjusting from 1 1/16" to 2 7/8" is a bunch. Were you able to " Twist 'er up" that much or did this require shorter strings to get those brace heights ? Factory EL on the Matrix bows are fairly short to start.
Re: Bow not as fast as you thought?
That was 5 twists per move using a Flemish string.flightattendant100 wrote:Don, adjusting from 1 1/16" to 2 7/8" is a bunch. Were you able to " Twist 'er up" that much or did this require shorter strings to get those brace heights ? Factory EL on the Matrix bows are fairly short to start.

Did Mr. Miller mention if a measurement was taken from the string to the Baby Bumpers/REDS when using the above BH settings ?

Re: Bow not as fast as you thought?
I didn't mention the bow or arrow or the distance between bumper and string because it is irrelevant. There are too many variables. The whole point was to illustrate that people can and maybe should play with their brace height.SEC-ond 2 none wrote:Boo wrote:That was 5 twists per move using a Flemish string.flightattendant100 wrote:Don, adjusting from 1 1/16" to 2 7/8" is a bunch. Re: Bow not as fast as you thought?
so I had a matrix 350 se come in its new in the box and very well made perfect in fact. When I put it together the riser had a green zombie string on it with a green tag that said buy a string aid. Brace height was 2" so I used my string aid
and ended up un twisting the string all the way even seemed to be twisted the wrong way. Brace height was still 3/4" off the bumpers I ended up putting it on a 330 with no twists and letting it sit for a week or two.Just for chits and grins would that green string with the 2" brace height get me 400fps with the 350 se?
I strung the 350 with a new string with a 1/4" brace height so you know.Green string looked to be made from green poly top plastic.

Re: Bow not as fast as you thought?
Danny is making the new green strings short on purpose as they do not stretch out and hit the riser while hanging in a shop like the old strings did. It would have shot fine and stretched pretty fast had you just shot it as was.
