405 Blackout

Post by ThunderXB »

"The Punisher".

I don't usually name things like this, but sometimes you gotta have a little fun.

Thanks to Paul and Norm for helping with aspects of this project.

Using mostly stock Excal parts.

405 polished re-anodized rail.
Re-Anodized then Carbon Fiber Hydro-dipped riser (Wyvern).
Excal factory Blackout stock, limbs, stock extender and airbrakes.
Ti64 hardware.
Triggertech.
DM endless loop all black string.
Dr S bumpers.
Haa Optimizer.
Weaver 6 screw tactical rings.
Vortex XBR.
Double wrapped retention spring.
Custom carbon fiber cheekpiece height adjusters.

8 shot string through chronograph averaged 386.1 FPS with 403.5 gr arrow. (20 fps faster than my factory 405 with same arrow. Must have gotten really good limbs this time.)

"Rich, I hope to meet you at Boofest if you can make it this year."

Going to try to make it Norm.

Have a little conflict right now, but working on it.

As far as the impact on the wallet, honestly not too bad compared to a new one and I've spent more on stuff I regretted.

While I obviously like the look, or I wouldn't have done it this way, I'm REALLY happy with the speed this one gives me.

Accuracy is the same excellent Excal "standard".

Such a nice 405!!. I noticed Air Brakes. Your speed measured with the ABs? Weight of string? What were the numbers on the limbs?

Steve,

I was initially a little surprised by the chrono numbers too, especially since my first 3 shots were all 387 FPS.

But I rebooted the chrono and shot my other bows with baseline numbers through it and it was right on where it normally is for them AND the numbers with this bow stayed up in the 385-387 range when I put 5 more shots through it.

I did notice immediately that this bow was a little harder to cock than my other 405. I'm assuming stiffer limbs as when this happened I checked the entire bow over to make sure I didn't miss anything when I put it together.

I did shoot it exactly as in the picture with the airbrakes on.

I didn't weigh the Danny Miller string.

The limbs numbers were 50.5 and 51.

I've been told that Excal changed their limb numbering because people were starting to ask for the higher numbers correlating higher number with higher deflection limbs, which at one time may have been truth.

Again this is a fantastic looking bow... What did you use to raise the cheek weld with? I'm using XBR's on my bows and need to raise mine up a bit..
