380 or 400

Post by oldmandoug »

I am new to the forum as well as crossbows. I am going to purchase either the 380 or the 400. Pretty sure I am sold on the micro suppressed for my wife. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

If it were me? I'd definitely get the 380! I'm just thinking about easier cocking as I age! My back has a hard time at 185 lbs of draw now! Good luck and be safe! Read as much as you can before you decide and get your feet completely wet!

First of all welcome to the forum.
They are both fine bows. Very well balanced and feel great in hand. There are only a few differences little longer power stroke, 20lb more draw weight and camo rail on the 400. I opted for the 400 simply because of the camo rail and it just felt right.

One thing to consider is that you have any type of upper body/back physical issues is you may want to purchase a crank cocker because they both can be a handful if you plan on target shooting a lot.

Another thing is whichever you decide on give the trigger a chance to get broke in, mine was not very good when new but after 75-100 shots it smoothed out I am pleased with it now. They are both very accurate and dependable bows and it really just comes down to which model feels best in your hands. There are a lot of good folks on here with a wealth of knowledge that can help you if needed.

Good luck and enjoy

Thanks, I appreciate that. I have read reviews until my eyes went blurry. I suppose you are right, just have to put them in my hands and see what feels right.
Again, thanks a heap.

The suppressor is not an easy bow to cock. I would be far more inclined to give my wife a 330. It's a far more enjoyable bow to shoot and could be a bow you wife can cock. I have one and I love shooting it.
There's not a whole lot of difference between the 380 or 400 Bulldogs speed wise. But, I am still amused by how fast and accurate my 405 Matrix is. I had a 400 Bulldog and sold it. I'll likely by a 380 BD next year.

I own both, 1 x 400 Bd and 2 x380 - For only one bow I'd go 380 for sure - it does it all and is maybe 10fps at best behind the BD. You cannot go wrong with either one but that's my 10 cents.

I think the question is choosing between the BD380 & BD400. My M380 & BD400 are very close in speed. My favorite bow is my M405, my next to favorite bow is my other M405. If I'm correct concerning the question between the 2 BDs, I'd take the 400. I expect the Matrix series will use the C-2 , if needed ; while, the BD & Micro series can use both the C-2 and C-3.

Thanks, definitely leaning heavy toward the 380. Think I found a shop nearby that you can try one.

Best to bring the wife in to check out what you want her to shoot as well.

You will also want to purchase a stringing aid when you buy your bow so you can adjust the brace height. The factory string will stretch quite a bit thru the first 50-75 shots and will need to be adjusted. They should sell them where you get your bow or you can find custom made ones from forum members in the trading post.

if your not in a hurry I would wait until after the ATA show in January. You might want one of the new Bows that Excalibur will release at the show... :)

Thanks for all the input. I guess I thought I would buy one and go to shooting and hunting with it. I believe I have a lot to learn, but I am sure it will be a good ride.

I would offer this advise. Don't focus on speed, focus on comfort, ability to cock the bow, and overall length to the user eye line up. If the bow fits, and you feel good about your ability to hit what you aim at, all of the offerings will kill whatever you hunt!
