Ground Blinds

Post by oldmandoug »

I am looking to get me a nice ground blind. Never bought one, always build one. Kinda getting a little to old for cutting and brushing constantly. I was trying to figure out which one is easiest to set up and has either straps or case for carrying. I hunt public land and the places I go are generally a long walk in.

Since they all leak anyway, I would recommend the Ghost Blind. No roof, but non restricting with walls, windows, etc. A bit pricey, but the last one I think you'll ever need. I love mine!

For the first time this year I used an Ameristep Brickhouse blind and it worked out OK.

Well, except for the fact that the bears seemed to like to play with it when I left it out for spring turkey hunting and they beat it up a little.

It was my first hub blind and one thing I would suggest is that if you go hub blind, make sure to try and assemble/pop it open, before you take it into the field.

The reason I say that, at least with the Ameristeps, is that some of them just don't pop open quite right.

(And that's not just me, even a store salesman told me that.)

So make sure you get a good one that does.

Nice part with a pop up is that it contains your scent well and keeps you more dry and warmer than sitting in the open.

Lightweight, very easy to carry or backpack, quick setup, reasonably priced. I would buy a simple doghouse blind for public land! If you use a flat silicone tent spray and set it up to airout and dry, it will Not leak when it rains! Good luck!

Thanks, I appreciate it. I see the advantage to putting it up before you try it in the field. I am sure none of them are completely waterproof, but I am getting older and really like all the comforts I can get!

I've been using the same Doghouse blind for 3 years. Mine is still holding up well. Left it out for 2 months this season. The fiberglass poles will not take rough handling or extreme flexing well. I've broke two sections and both were my fault when I over flexed them. Be careful with them and they will last a long time.

Here is my review of it with some tips:

In really wet weather you can cover the top with a tarp. I used one and just folded it to just cover the top of the blind. Worked great since I leave my chair , cushions, etc. in the blind. It's on Private land so no theft to worry about. On Public land I hunt dark to dark so I leave it there also since no one is in my spot after dark.

Shop around they can be had fairly inexpensively after hunting season.
Farm Stores can be a very good source!!

You guys have just about talked me into a Ghost Blind. Seems pricey for what you get but it's only money!!

My spot on the creek with be a good place to try it out. I would have my back to the creek with is about 50 yards wide.

Just when I thought I finally had all the hunting gear I needed!!

You can buy one with the extensions almost as cheap as building one. I watched several of the videos and most said the same thing.
That said I use a Double Bull Matrix 360 blind that is 10-15 years old as it was one of the originals from DB long before they sold to Primos. It has never leaked other than the seams and a little spray takes care of that. A tad expensive but it has outlasted 5 blinds a friend of mine has bought and worn out during that time period trying to save $$$.
