Amen to that, I hunt with a rifle mostly, I am fairly new to crossbow hunting just wasn't sure of the real capabilities of the crossbow as well as the "hunter". It is helpful to hear all of your comments. Confirms my suspicions that the range should be far more reasonable to be sure to make a clean kill.

Under great weather conditions n no wind it is doable. It really boils down to can you live wid the shots you make n not kill but cripple ! I prefer my shots 60 n under n so fer the farthest i have shot n killed a deer was 47 yds a few yrs back. I have never shot any that far n crippled one, i jus have shot that one that far.

the real challenge of bow hunting is shooting animals under 20 yards. I save the long pokes for my Savage 10ML ii.. Lol

Bow hunted for 30 years - crossbow for 3 years and I have never shot a deer over 28 yards, and most have been under 18 yards.
I like the challenge that comes with getting close and personal for archery season.

My furtherest shot on an animal is 37yds...and that was a poke for me.
To many things can happen past 40yds that you cannot controll and none of them good.

I guess there’s a chance a deer would jump the string and land by the time the arrow got there so you might just be able to hit him

Emphatically no.

If you want to shoot deer at that distance use a rifle. Even at 400+ fps it takes an arrow takes too long to reach the target. If a deer moves even a little, at worst you have wounded a deer instead of an ethical kill and at best you completely miss. In the unlikely event the deer stands there like a statue and there is no wind and you produce an excellent shot, it might work but the odds are too low.

In addition, the more we try to make crossbows perform like a rifle the more regulatory bodies will want to regulate them like a rifle. So keep on pushing the limit and say goodbye to the archery season....I say spend your effort on becoming a better archery hunter by getting closer to the animal. Brag about how you did a perfect heart shot at 15 yards rather than how you took that big buck at 100 yards with a crossbow.....

I don't. Folks have been posting about shooting 100 yards with their 400 fps bows for a long time before Ravin was introduced. I have yet to see any post OR COMMERCIAL touting shooting at any animal at 100 yards. Target shooting yes, but as said that was being done not long after Scorpyd bows hit the market.

Something for you to consider trying. rig up your 100 yard target with a pole or something off to the side and put a snatch block on it. Get enough rope to run from your target to you shooting position. Place target on something smooth enough that it can slide attach rope to target and run it back to shooting position. At the sound of your shot have somebody else give the rope a pull and see how fare target moves before your arrow arrives. Could give you some idea how fare a deer could move just because just because it felt like it. You might even try that at 60 yards.

on a different hunting forum -we were discussing the new garmin sight and comments were made about it would reduce the number of wounded animals.

anyway it also discussed the possiblility of hunnters taking longer shots - due to the instant rangefinding abilities.

My point was archery skills plus ethical shots are gonna make the difference in the number of wounded animals - not a rangefinding red dot sight.

of course a guy chimes in --I killed my buck at 111 yrds and it didin't go 15 yrds. - he practices 1000's of shots at 100 yrds + -etc.
