Doe hunt took an interesting turn!
My Dad's friend and his grandson drove down to meet us at another friends place. After a very long drive we were disappointed that is was raining. Dad and I went into a box blind and Dad's friend and 18 year old grandson went into another about a mile away. My brother stayed at the house to help cook dinner. We did see some deer but they were too far away for the bow. I saw Sandhill Cranes for the first time, a very noisy cool looking bird. We went in for dinner. The owner of the ranch said we could shoot a doe because the grandson of our friend was trying to get a certain buck that had been seen. My brother decided he did not want to hunt and neither did my Dad. After a nice long sleep we were up at 5AM and drove several miles to a different location. It started raining again. At 715AM it stopped raining for a second and we heard a shot from our friend. He got his first buck ever, a 11 point deer that scored 151. At 9AM it was raining hard so we called to get picked up. After a big breakfast and a lot of talking about what to do we drove out in an open UTV in the rain and it was cold, cold, cold. We sat until 3PM and I was freezing because of course I didn't listen to my Dad and didn't have enough clothes. On the way in a 10 pointer ran out of the woods and crossed an opening and went back into a patch of woods. I said, "Too bad we aren't hunting bucks". The owner stopped the UTV. He said "If you can spot and stalk him on foot with your bow then he's yours". I did not want to carry the crossbow because it is heavy for me to carry a long time and my Dad said "your deer, your gear". I opened my vertical bow case and grabbed my release and 3 arrows with broadheads. My Dad went with me. We walked a long time and I forgot about being cold. We lost sight of the buck somewhere in the woods. We decided to keep going until we got to the other side where there was another opening. After almost an hour passed my Dad stopped and grabbed my arm. "He's right there", he said. I looked and was surprised to see him standing in a little opening. I asked how far and Dad said "26.5". That is yards because he had the rangefinder. We just sighted in my bow pins for 15 on the top pin, 20 in between the top and middle and 25 on the middle. The buck quartered away hard so I put the pin where I thought the arrow would come out between his front legs. I saw the arrow hit towards the back of the rib cage and was disappointed at my shot. The deer ran a long way and went out of sight. We called my brother and he met us. He found blood and then the arrow in about 30 yards. The arrow looked good and the blood trail was steady. We tracked for almost 40 minutes even though we only went about 125 yards. I saw a deer and then realized it was a doe. She was looking down at something and ran in a circle then stopped and looked down again. The blood was leading right to her. When we got close she ran away but I could see the antlers lying on the ground. My Dad and I snuck up and we could now see the buck was not moving. My brother joined us and we went and got him. I was surprised to see the arrow actually came out right behind his shoulder and the shot actually hit the liver and both lungs! This is my biggest deer ever and first buck with a compound bow. My Dad said this year "you shoot it you clean it". He meant it. He showed us how on his friends grandson's deer. I had to do mine myself for the first time. It wasn't as bad as I thought. Then my brother decided he wanted to hunt but wanted to try one of Dad's muzzleloaders. He doesn't shoot guns and wouldn't even watch Dad clean deer. He has only used the crossbow and then waited in the house when the cleaning was done. Well, he took two practice shots with a .62 caliber smoothbore and then went out with Dad to the first blind we used. About a half hour later a doe showed up and my brother hit it exactly where Dad told him too. I did not believe he would clean it himself, but Dad hung it up and walked inside. I went out to see and had to take a picture to capture my little Bro actually cleaning his own deer!
