#&^$@*!

Post by BrotherRon »

I have a problem.
I need to send my limbs to Excalibur for replacement= my 310 is brown and the limbs are bright green. lol
In the past I have taken the limbs off my crossbows and put them back together with no problem, however...
I had problems last summer and sent the complete riser and limb assembly to Woodys for a replacement.
I am beginning to think that he used permanent loctite on them??
I cannot break the the bolts loose to save my life. If I try any harder I am afraid I will break something. I really don't want to send the complete riser limb assembly to Canada as postage would probably be outrageous.
Any suggestions? .... I'm about ready to try an impact driver. lol

Thanks.
Ron.

Heat the bolts with a mini lighter torch to soften the loctite compound.

That is not good! If they did use the permanent red loctite it will take heat to break the bond, blue is the medium grade and you should be able to get the bolts loose with some effort. I can see using the blue loctite on the bolts, but not the red.
They do have a manual impact driver, might need to give that a try, I would call Excalibur first and see if they have any ideas about getting the bolts out, I would think that they have ran into this already. If you don't feel comfortable messing with it bite the bullet and send the complete riser back and let them worry about it since the limbs were installed by a authorized rep.
Not much help but my 2c, good luck!

Ron I would try a hand held impact driver you won't hurt anything trying this. I would not use heat. JMO

If you sent them on in 2018, they probably used the new high fidel lock tight that all the fasteners come with now.
I'd start with an Hex key socket and ratchet handle .

If that doesn't cut it light heat on the bolt head Like Normous suggested. Local heat will break it loose real quick. If they did use the locktight, it will need heat. If you want to be super careful, heat a hex hey up hot with the torch and let the heat transfer, same as you would an insert.

Don't apply heat directly to the limb obviously, but you're getting the limbs replaced anyway???

If you're in the US, why not send to Danny Miller...if you can't get them off......I would use an impact driver if you've got one.

Sound like he is trying to avoid the higher cost of sending the entire assembly in.

If you complete an RMA it will go to Excalibur's repair depot in Michigan.
If you want to try it your self an impact driver is your best bet. Hammer in the allen socket before starting.
You can also cut a straight piece of allen key and tap that it to the fastener, then heat the piece of allen key. That will localize the heat. An extra safety margin can be had by placing wet cloth on all metal parts adjacent to the allen fastener being worked on.

Maybe putting crossbow outside in the cold for few hour hours will help the limb bolt shrink just enough to loosen it.

I would try the heated allen key trick then follow up with a quick freeze outsider use one of the canned air sprays to quickly cool it once it is heated.
( have also heard of some people placing a hot soldering iron tip in the middle of the bolt head to heat it )

The freeze/thaw cycle often does the trick when straight heat won't alone won't work.
But then again it all depends on how cold it gets in your neck of the woods.

I completed the RMA and was told to send it across the pond
The reason they are getting replaced is because they are bright green and my 310 is very brown.
They are going to try and locate a darker set of limbs for me to match the 310 better.
The color really doesn't bother me or the deer I shoot...
but I have had a couple people ask me why the limbs are a different color.
