Age/ getting old /cocking a crossbow

Post by longbow joe »

A few years back my shoulder had a little injury. I just never really could shoot my longbow as good as l used to. Another factor is l simply dont have the time to shoot and shoot and practice daily with the longbow that basically is needed to achieve the level that l feel l need for hunting.
Now l had my little cardiac incident a few months ago . Even though I'm deemed "better" there is just this mental gloom that I'm going down hill.
Honestly l felt that going to the gym and staying active would just override all the junk food and bad that l did.
I'm just not used to the feeling of old age setting in.
I used to just go and go and always had time to hunt or fish after work now l have the time to go sometimes and l dont take advantage of it like l used too. I know I'm lucky to still be healthy but l guess I'm just saying that there is a big difference between 18 and 53 and now I'm kinda seeing it. Lol. My old friend that l help down the road is 90 and says that l should go every chance l get. That's what really keeps me going .l think of age more and more on the forum when l hear the word ...."cranks"

Your preaching to the choir here brother
I’m 56 and in reasonably good health for having 7 different surgeries through the years. It’s getting a little tougher to hand crank these Excalibur’s than it used to be.
I can still cock my 380 but it’s stout, I cocked my micro 355 one time and ordered the charger XT :D :D

Come on Joe, @ 53 you're still a youngster, but it's all downhill from there!
I'm 71 and can cock a 380, but I have noticed I have slowed down a bit, well actually maybe a lot!

Joe, you’re not old. Everyone should use a crank well before they have to. That way they won’t have to nearly as soon.

53 is not old! I just turned 70, and, while I can't do everything I could at 35, I don't feel old. I retired a few years ago and I wish I had quit working earlier. People who like to hunt and fish are seldom among those who say they are bored in retirement. Stay as healthy and fit as you can so you can enjoy the increased opportunities to do the things you like. No one on their death bed ever said "I wish I had spent more time working".

I'm a young 64 y.o. whipper snapper with a few minor health issues, like leukemia, stroke, severe arrhythmias, severe arthritis in my shoulders, elbows, spine, knees, hips, stage 3 kidney failure, chronic vertigo and probably a couple other things that don't seem too important. I have to force myself to walk, ride a bike and do strength training everyday to stay feeling good! I still hand cock my BD400 with the new hot limbs a dozen or so times during a session before resorting to the C2 crank.
My health team tells me to 'use it or lose it' so I am not going down without a good fight. Be smart, careful and use good form for everything physical as you age but don't give stuff up just because of age and health...

I'm 61, still draw the cocking rope on my Micro Suppressor 355. Still climb a ladder stand, and hunt as much as possible. Fish too.
I agree, "use it or lose it" is what I've always heard.
I know there will come a day that the old back says, "No More". I already ahead of the game. I carry a C2 crank in my bow case, just to be ready!

I will turn 70 in December and still rope cock my Scorpyd DS 420 and all 3 of my Excaliburs (largest 350). I have had rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder and need it on my left one now. I also have arthritis in both my hands. I do own a C2 cocker but only used it right after having my surgery. It does get used for string changes and brace height adjustments and will probably come in handy once I get old.
