correct broadheads

Post by henrycohunter »

I have a matrix grz that came with Diablo 18" bolts. I shot a big doe w/spitfire 125 gr. mechanical broadhead but it didn't open at all.
I have a fixed blade also 125 gr. Both broadheads are 11/8 diameter and from my compound bow days, Do I need special "crossbow" broadheads or is the weight and type of these two acceptable? I had hoped that 305 fps was enough for these broadheads
Thanks

Those will be fine for crossbow use. A Spitfire not opening is unusual, I have heard of them opening on the shot, but usually that’s due to operator playing with them, wearing out the little dimples that keep them closed. Make sure you verify accuracy with your broad heads by shooting them before you put them in your quiver!

Also to spin test the fix blade head on arrow, to make sure no wobble. If there is the head and arrow are not straight.

As long as the broadhead is sharp, the arrow spins true and you have enough FOC weight, you should be good to go.

Never heard of a Spitfire not opening.
Never happened to me with the several dozen deer my Matrix has taken.
Rather unusual.
And I will keep on using the 125 grain Spitfires as they have produced more than excellent results for me every single time.

Cheers,

I have a GRZ2 and I use 100 grain muzzy trocar fixed and Excalibur Xact expandable . Don't see a reason to use 125 Grain 100 Grain does the job on deer and turkeys Xact opens every time . Question did you band the spitfire ? If so maybe that had something to do with it not opening . Or did it open and when you found the arrow the blade was closed ? Don't mean to start anything .

I have taken several deer with Spitfire broadheads that when I found the arrow the blades were closed. Upon inspection though there was no doubt the broadheads were open exiting the animal. I sent NAP an email about this because I was totally confused.
Their response was that sometimes the blades will close upon impacting the ground or other objects. I don’t remember everything they said because this was several years ago. If there’s a big hole on the exit side I wouldn’t worry to much.

I use the 125 grain spitfire with my Matrix 310 (same as the Grizzly) and have not had a problem.
My arrows tipped with a 125 grain broad head weigh 426 grains and had a complete pass through at 42 yards last fall.

Thanks to all that replied. Was under impression I had to switch to "crossbow broadheads", glad to know I can still use the spitfires.
BTW, today I shot @ 3-d from 20 &25yds. and spitfires opened. :) Matrix has been a Godsend since my shoulder surgery!

IMO each one of us needs to find what broadhead your bow shoots the best. To do this it takes time and work.

We as archery hunters need to test broadheads to see what works in your set up, that includes mechanical's(from different mfg.), fixed blade's(single bevel, double bevel, two, three, & four blade), and CAN'T, go by, what works for me, is what will work for you.

Not spitfires but I just received 2 different packs of rage Hypodermic broadheads. 1 pack of crossbow heads and 1 pack of standard heads. Basically putting them side by side the only difference is a heavier collar is installed on the crossbow heads. I have no problems at all shooting the collars on the standard heads at 400 fps with a dental band put on for additional insurance.

I like the grim reapers or slicck tricks out of my crossbow or vertical bow. Lots of good options though.
