Drawing without an Aid

Post by Buck »

My first Excalibur was the Phoenix which I purchased when they were first introduced. I vaguely remember attempting to cock by hand but honestly can’t recall if I was successful. I know that cocking a more modern excal without the rope or crank would be impossible for most everyone.

Does anyone recall drawing without aid ? If so which of the older models would that option be realistic possibility? I know that there are many factors such as the individual’s size and strength but I’m sure some models offered platforms with a fraction of today’s cocking effort.
Micro 335 / Hawke XB30 Pro- Excal Sound Deadening System....
Matrix 350 SE / Hawke XB30 Compact - Couldn't say no......
308 Shorty / Hawke XB30 Pro- Tack driver ....
Axe 340 Raid / Hawke XB30 Compact - ....

I cocked the 380 with a rope one time, but could instantly feel my back complaining so I went with the 310.
I will be purchasing a BD330 very soon ;)

I drew my Axiom by hand once, it was doable for me.

All the early crossbows were hand cocked. I can't remember which models started with the grove for rope cocking.

Hand cocking is more about technique and not so much about strength. My dad hand cocked his exomag well into his 70's and it took us kids a lot of convincing for him to get a rope cocker for when we practiced. I still prefer to hand cock the exomag because I find it easier (less action required and faster).

I guess I still like keeping things simple, why I like Excalibur.

I used to but I rarely did I used the cocking rope as using it I kept the string straight and even . Now I use the charger crank as I am not strong enough to even use the rope .

I have hand cocked the highest poundage long limb excalibur crossbows. I wouldn't want to do a lot of practice with one hand cocking, but for hunting purposes, I could handle it.

I have hand cocked a 355, but it was "not fun" and a struggle. But in a pinch while out hunting if I had to I could do it.

most people when they hand cock a crossbow will not have the string even as one arm is stronger then the other . Hence shot going way to the right or left doesn't take much of the string being off to screw up the shot .

Vixen was the first one with a cocking aid groove and also the first with a manual safety .
