Last night I had a nice sized doe under me that I normally would have shot had I not seen the fawn that was with it earlier.
The fawn was the smallest deer that I have ever seen this time of year. It is only half the size of the other deer from this year. It still had it's red summer coat and all of it's spots.
They were about 100 yards away when I first saw them and the fawn went into some thick brush and stayed there. The doe came past me and went to the field that I was near.
I am so glad that I saw the fawn before shooting the doe.

Yeah , we decided only mature does with no fawns.
Sure the fawn was from a late rut encounter. Really tough when the fawns are so small they are still in Hiding mode.
We did take one "long nosed" doe. No fawns with her but still probably had them running around somewhere, it can be a tough call.

Good on you. i have been passing up every decent size doe that I had a chance at because of fawns with them. I finally got a 1 1/2 YO that did not have a fawn. We are having a very good fawn year.

Yep, kill Mom, and you might as well kill the fawn too.

Very good choice. Sometimes it's just the right thing to do.rmb721 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 20, 2019 9:43 amLast night I had a nice sized doe under me that I normally would have shot had I not seen the fawn that was with it earlier.

Around here I tell people that if they shoot Mom they are just making coyote bait out of the fawns. I have seen a few fawns running with another doe and fawns but I doubt that happens real often.

Had to pass on a few freezer filler does already cuz the cute little face(s) popped up just in time behind her. They usually put on a good show...
