Still can't believe he posed for the picture!

I was always told to stand on an antler before you poke a dead-looking buck. Use the outside of your closest foot(relative to the way you are standing beside the body) so if it does come up it won't get you in the inner thigh.

They just had on the news this morning that a guy in Arkansas shot a buck with a muzzleloader and when he walked up on it the buck charged him and they found him dead with puncher wounds, they are not sure if he died from puncher wounds or had a heart attack.

.....and I thought the minute the deer saw the Excalibur CB it just drops in its place out of reverence to what's about to kill it anyway! :eusa-doh: :eusa-liar:

That is scary and shows what can happen when you let your guard down.

The only safe way to approach a down deer is from behind, above it's back. This way it is very difficult to kick you and impossible to gore you before you can react. I am sorry but I won't put my foot anywhere near it's antlers before I know it is dead, just too easy for one swing of the head to stick your leg.

I understand how people let their guard down (even I do sometimes) but it is our safety at risk here.

It is also not just deer we need to worry about for safety. I forget where it was, but I saw on the internet many years ago where a guy reached down to pick up a large turkey when the turkey spurred his hand, ripping the whole palm wide open.

Please everyone, BE SAFE!

WOW....you're lucky to be alive!!! Was that a hoof in the melon? Glad you're around to remind us what can happen. Get well soon.

I wonder if that is slashing from a hoof or antler ripping. Don't see any hunter blood on the rack or deer's head, though.

If the eyes are closed beware! When I approach a downed deer I stay back a few yards and check it’s eyes, and watch the chest for any breathing. They can mess you up pretty badly with nothing to lose.
