Houghton Lake Mi 8 point
Sunday Nov 3rd I am out to my tree stand well before first light the weather has been below freezing at night and just above freezing in the day snowing at night and melting during the day or raining but their is enough snow in the woods in the mornings to really improve visibility.
I hunt until 12:00 before I see my first deer a doe with a fawn about 100 yards away checking out a huge scrape where I walk in off a birch ridge along a ceder stand that leads into a tag alder swamp with the snow I can make out bits and pieces of them the doe works her way toward me and cuts into the tag alders but her fawn is no ware to be seen ,it shows up about 20 minutes later on moms trail but beds down on the edge of the tags and just chews its cud on my right hand side.
This is at 12:30 when I had decided was when I was going to go in for lunch but decided to stick it out a bit longer as i was seeing deer,in fact a second doe approached the scrape briefly started to travel on a path that would not bring her any way near me and she has a buck on her tail she is about 100 yards out I grab my grunt call and hit it three times and the buck starts coming my way, I am thinking the fawn is going to bust me at this point after calling but no, the buck ends up on the first does and fawns trail coming steady and he is a shooter in fact he walks up to the bedded fawn buts him with his nose and pushes him off his bed this gave me the chance to stand up in my tree stand and turn around to shooting position as they are on my right and i am right handed.
Now I am in position but the buck is following mom's trail into the tags which is a jungle of sticks like you would not believe he gets his shoulder area into a very small shooting window at 30 yards and I bleat with my mouth to stop him and it worked , TING I touch off the shot I thought would never happen and the buck spins around back where he came from full tilt I can see him over a hundred yards out still flying topping over the birch ridge. Wow now is when I always start second guessing stuff and am thrilled and filled with anxiety at the same time. I know the deer was going full tilt over a hundred yards after the shot not good I normally wait an hour before trailing but after a half hour I figure it is safe to look for the arrow with the deer so far away, no arrow to be found but blood less than ten feet from ware the spin marks are on the wet ground from the shot.
I give it another hour and go to where I saw him top the ridge and pick up the trail their, he went another 100 yards before piling up with a front quartering shot through both lungs with a 4 blade slick trick, one tough deer!
