What insert weight for new length bolts?

Post by XB I GO »

So I am getting new bolts. I am sticking with the .001 Black Eagle Zombie Slayers. We've used 20" all along because we used them in all of our crossbows, but now I am going to go with the 18". I can get 110 grain or 92 grain inserts. The old bolts at 20" had 110 grain inserts and we shot 150 grain broadheads. I am also switching to 125 grain broadheads. I was gifted some Sonic Liberty 125 grain and I have a lot of practice 125 grainers. I am loosing 2" of arrow weight or about 18.2 grains. I am losing 25 grains of broadhead weight with the new ones. So I'm already 33.2 grains less than the old bolts. Do I want to shed another 18 grains by going to 92 grain inserts (-51.2 grains) or get the 110 grain inserts and limit the weight loss to 33.2 grains? Thanks! :eusa-think:

Go with the 110 grain inserts, and then if you want a little more weight add set screws inside the inserts. Make sure they are deep enough in before securing with finger nail polish. I did this for a set of 100 grain heads I want to use, the heads come in 100 grains. I’m going to email Black Eagle and request one more weight insert for the crossbow shafts, we’ll keep our fingers crossed for that.

XB your numbers are 10g off. (18.2+25=43.2) That said dropping to the lighter insert would reduce weight even further to over 60g.

If you are too light you can always tune heavier with screw in weights or heavier broadheads. Only way to get lighter is thru broadheads.

I prefer heavy arrows as they have always tuned easier for me.

You should be fine either way 18 grs. is very little difference. I normally try and keep my hunting arrow weight between 415-425 grs. Some people like to go heavier with their arrow and broadhead combinations. How far is your normal hunting distance, if you're hunting distance is 30 yards and in you could use the heavier insert and still use the heavier broadhead without any issues at all.

Thanks for the 411. Yeah, my math is bad. I will go with the 110 grain inserts and try the 125 grain heads. I have plenty of 100 grainers too that I could try if I need to. Thank you.

110's in any length make for a very forgiving arrow.
I just puts some 110's into some 18" executioners cut to 15.5" for a 315 for a total of 392Grn w/muzzy 100 fixed BH's. Should work very well.
