refinish laminate stock?

Post by Robinsons Rebel »

Going to try to refinish a laminate stock after the season comes to an end. I've seen some videos on you tube an such with them using tru oil. Never seen them seal it after. Any thoughts from anybody who has done it? Thanks.

In the past I have owned two laminate stocks, one from Ruger and the other my Custom Henegar grey/black thumbhole that nicely complimented my Matrix 405, both needed a finish refresh.

I didn't choose Tru oil but chose Tung Oil as my first attempt to renew their finishes. Tung Oil is a hard drying wood oil made from the seed of a Tung tree that provides a beautiful finish, it resists marring and penetrates well.

To start ,what I did was clean the stock then sand with 0000 Steel Wool and clean again before applying tung oil by hand using a cotton cloth. The next day after drying I would lightly sand again then clean with a damp cloth before applying another coat.

Since I had time over the winter my coating count was between 5 and 6 . When finished, the end visual and important stock feel was certainly improved and further down the road proved very durable after use.

Proper" tung oil is just oil. Tru-Oil, and many products that are labeled as tung oil without the word "pure," are polymerized oil. Tru-Oil hardens more than true tung oil and wears through more slowly. It is also able to be polished up to a gloss surface.

I have refinished several gun stocks with Tru oil and it is a beautiful finish. It requires mutipul coats with sanding in between with 0000 steel wool between coats but the results are very nice.
If you private message me your phone # I could send a picture of a refinished stock.
