mechanical broad heads

Post by LRMNUT »

Just shot my first deer with a crossbow Grizz 2 I was using mechanical broad heads they didn't seem to open up the way I had expected I have always shot fixed blades in my compound bow but decided to try these.I put a good hit on the deer had no trouble finding it, it went about 70 yards but the blood trail wasn't that good due to the entry and exit wound only being about the size of my finger. What do you guy shoot I went with the mechanical for better arrow flight.
Thanks
Lee

Blades did not open . If both holes were that small lucky you found it . Now for a question how was the deer facing when you shot . I used Excalibur xact for I while I went back to fixed blade so I don't have to worry if the blades opened . Right now I am shoot Ramcat Hydroshock

The entry hole with a mechanical will always be smaller. But your exit should be full size.

A blood trail can be very different depending on the situation. Shots from elevation with the exit hole lower usually gives a better blood trail. Shots from the ground (parallel) has the exit and entry holes fairly even and your blood trail might not be what you want oe expect. Remember a large blood trail usually has blood pooling inside before reaching the hole and exiting. If it is a higher hit, the blood has to pool higher before exiting. Pieces of ft or meat might also lot the holes to limit blood exiting.

A 70 yard recovery is not to bad. It means the head must have worked fairly well. But the only way to tell for sure is to inspect the path through the animal the head took.

I have been a Mechanical broadhead shooter ( maybe fenatic) since 1995 and have plenty of positive experience with them over the many years using this type of head.

The Rocket hammerhead used in my early years always left always a smile on my face with good blood trails and short recoveries.

Next was the NAP FOR 170 2 blade used for many years with similar results. Today, NAP is made in China and quality suffers according to internet sources

In 2018 I discovered SWAT broadheads made and manufactured in the US by veterans. SWAT BHeads has replaced the NAP FOC hands down. Their X MAG , VECTOR and HYBRID DO print like field point groups and leave "Drain Your Game" large holes.

SWAT is sending me the new 2020 MOAB and VECTOR CP very soon for high speed testing.

If you are looking for large cut 4 blade mechanical with 440/420 SS .036 blades combined with great flight characteristics take a look at SWAT.

Note: Pm me if Canadian members might interested in purchasing SWAT BH's in Canada, I carry them at fair prices.

Explain how the entry hole is always smaller please?
This is an entry hole from a 2.3" hypodermic:

The OP said a gut hit and it went down in 70 yards. I would say that mechanical definitely did its job correctly.

I think the original poster meant a "good hit" not a "gut hit". Just a typo.

I got some of the rages a couple years ago and everything I have shot with them has had a large entry and exit hole. If you are getting a small entry with a mech I'd switch.

Just an FYI, NAP is no longer in Illinois. They were sold to GSM and are now being made in China.

I always shot the nap thunderheads for years. They were very accurate but I didn't like the small blood trails. Since I have been shooting these rages it looks like a slasher movie even on horizontal shots where it took many yards before getting good blood with these after about 10-20 yards blood like its on blood thinners lol
