Re: What Turkey Call For A Beginner?
Wow I was able to find 2 boxes of Winchester Long beard XR 3.5" number 6 shot. My choices were #4 or #6 shot. I went the #6, I wanted #5 but the 6s will have to do.

Janesey, once I called PatternMaster and they explained the difference between the extended range and the Code Black Turkey I agree the code black is the better choice. I'm looking for one now. So much to learn so little time lol.janesy wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2020 6:45 pmI just picked up a pattern master code black turkey I'm looking forward to paterning soonStepnoutnb wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2020 12:35 pmI’ll be using my Winchester SX3. I have a PatternMaster extended ranch choke tube. I’ve been using PatternMaster choke tubes goose hunting for years. I’ll look around and see what we have around here for 3 or 3.5 lead shot.

Thanks, I was lucky to find the Win long beard XR #6 or 4 but I went with the 6. I suppose I could pattern the 6 if they don't work I can return one box for the #4'sartifact wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2020 1:04 pmNow you started a whole new conversation!
Different guns like different shells, I found out my 870 super mag likes #5 Winchester long beard XR and a .665 choke. I'm sure you pattern, if you don't make sure you do, but using a .640 and the .665 choke with various other ammo, that combo patterned way better in that gun.
I never used hevi shot, some guys swear by it.

I have shot 4s-5s and 6s over the years and really can't recommend one over the other if you keep your shots under 50 yards. I prefer the 4s and 5s on over 50 yard shots. I am shooting a Mossberg 835 using 3 1/2" mags and it is not picky in the least.Stepnoutnb wrote: ↑Mon Mar 16, 2020 6:34 pmWow I was able to find 2 boxes of Winchester Long beard XR 3.5" number 6 shot. Thank you, seems like everything I’ve read and watched say the same thing. I suppose there is a reason they make 4-5-6 Turkey loads. They all work within the suggested limits.robertyb wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 8:01 amI have shot 4s-5s and 6s over the years and really can't recommend one over the other if you keep your shots under 50 yards. Many years ago when lead shot was the norm for Waterfowlers everyone used #4 shot. I used#5 but soon realized #6 lead was a killer. Killed many duck with #6 and rarely wounded one. On a marginal shot placement it only took 3 hits from #6 lead to harvest a bird. Pattern density was the key. Now I know a turkey has bigger bones so the farther the shot the heavier 4&5 will carry more energy.
Oh why am I getting into this lol. Life was so simple before the province announced a turkey draw lol.
Enjoy the day all.

Wayne, let us know what you think of the recoil of a 3 1/2" turkey load.
Some people just like stepping on rakes
Re: What Turkey Call For A Beginner?
He will find out, thank goodness you usually only need one shot!
I have a bunch of Winchester Supreme 3 1/2" that I bought dirt cheap when K Mart was getting out of guns and ammo. In my gun the Longbeard XR patterned much better than the Supremes, in your gun it may be the exact opposite, you won't know that until you pattern the gun.
Here's something to think about, when I first started turkey hunting I put the bead on the head and got a bunch of birds, then I read somewhere to aim at the base of the neck and have harvested birds by doing that.
Reason being, if you aim at the head app. half the pattern is above the head. The downside to that is, when I aimed at the head there weren't nearly as many pellets in the body, since aiming at the base of the neck I notice a lot more pellets in the body.
Someone else may chime in on aimpoint, just thought I would mention it.

Re: What Turkey Call For A Beginner?
I understand. When I was a kid ground swatting grouse under the apple trees of grown up abandoned farms with a full choke single shot 12 gauge I missed birds aiming at the head. The pattern was too tight and I was too close. Took awhile but after I clued in I aimed for the base of the neck. Cut a few heads off.artifact wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 12:37 pmHe will find out, thank goodness you usually only need one shot!

Re: What Turkey Call For A Beginner?
Been on the receiving end of some crazy loads. Shot a few 1650 FPS steel 3 1/2” and 3” mag lead.....been quite awhile. I’m sure I’ll go for the 3 inch lol. Hopefully I’m going for the one shot kill.
I had an old Baikal side by side bruised my cheek every time I used it. Finally I showed to a part time gunsmith he said this thing must break your jaw when you shoot it. Yes sir, how do you know that. He explained the butt was at the wrong angle it was angled for driven pheasant hunting, taking shots overhead on high incoming birds. He told me to remove the pad and cut the stock 90 degrees to the plain of the barrels. I did......turned that face killer to a hell of duck killer. Man that gun could reach out and kill ducks and no more flinching from me.

Oh jeez! Candle Sticks! Lots of people report patterns withstand a tighter centre from 3" loads when not using an overbored barrel. Maybe give them a try too.Stepnoutnb wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 11:04 amHere I go again. I just ordered several boxes of Winchester Supreme Turkey loads in 3 1/2 and 3 " in 4 and 5 shot all are 2oz.
